We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kaiman Dukes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kaiman below.
Alright, Kaiman thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
2 years ago I was in a dark place mentally and had lost a sense of self. In the process of recovery & building a new friendship, I found myself blowing the dust off of some childhood passions, which lead me to start sketching more. Some time went by and I begin to imagine myself as an entrepreneur on a broad scale, using the original talents and gifts God had given me. The birth of Urbane Living begins, after some soul searching & research I started creating and planning my Graphic Design business. The name Urbane Living came to me through the inspiration of being unique, different, & savvy. I felt that stepping into this field would give me an opportunity to share my creative genius with the world and bring other’s to life. Although there are many other Graphic Designers in the world, the business is very open & profitable. I believe that creativity & art can continuously be expanded upon, so I took it & ran with it. I may not have solved a new problem, but I most definitely brought a different approach. It excited me to know that my artwork would grab the attention of those who were ultimately connected to my purpose and looking for something never seen before.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kaiman Dukes and I am an upcoming Entrepreneur & Creator. Urbane Living is a creative idea that I eventually brought to life. The idea begin just by simply posting artwork that I had created and once I seen that it was gaining some attention, the idea of making it a business became a reality. I started by creating the initial necessities; a logo, name, business plan, etc. Urbane Living is a Graphic Design business that offers primarily Logo Design. Others such as T-Shirt designs & Animated Artwork are also services provided. In terms of problems I solve…I create designs that separate from the competition, help the client understand who they are and what they stand for, professionalism of design, & lead conversion just to name a few. As a Graphic Designer I create visual concepts; using computer software, to communicate ideas that inform, inspire, & captivate consumers. The thing that most excites me about this business is being able to share how I see design in my head, taking what the client sees and making it into a never before seen work of art. Originality is everything when it comes to Logo Design and I would say that I personally do a wonderful job of that. As a new small business owner I haven’t even begin to scratch the surface of what I believe my mind can achieve when it comes to creativity and design. If a client is looking to bring an idea to life, that creates jaw dropping retention, I’m the guy!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first started Urbane Living, I was working in Houston for SwissPort at the time. There was an older gentleman by the name of Clarence. In my time there we built a bond and would communicate about all sorts of things and one day my business came up. As I began to explain to him how I felt about the world of business and the things that where concerning, he said something to me that changed my life. He said “millions of people like the president & millions of people don’t, but did that stop him from getting into office?”. As he expanded on this wisdom, my whole perspective on life immediately shifted, but in terms of my business it pushed me into a new gear of No Fear, No Retreat. That statement caused me to understand that life is a game of wins and losses, but how I respond to those “losses” will determine just how far I can go. I began to understand that down times are temporary and I must persevere in this midst of adversity.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building an audience on social media was by far the most frustrating in my opinion. I am still in the process of getting Urbane Living out there to the rest of world that I have yet to reach. The process began by consistently sharing the content I had created. Learning the importance of knowing the algorithm of my platform, what consumers like to see, & how to use tags, keywords, & hashtags to my advantage so that my business could expand. My advice to anyone on building a social media presence is to POST, POST, POST. It doesn’t even matter if you think it’s not post worthy, some one out there is looking for the thing YOU created. Constantly share your creativity with the rest of the world
