Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Macey Alexander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Macey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
For me, launching photography full time is two-fold. Personally, it allows me to spend more time with my son and have the flexibility to work my schedule around this new season of motherhood. My mission is “purpose beyond pictures.” Photography is so much more than taking pictures. It opens doors for me to connect with people I wouldn’t have otherwise and in a way that can be so intimate. It is an honor to capture some of life’s most important moments from senior year to wedding day and all the other simpler times that become just as special when captured. My goal is to always make my clients feel valued and photographed in their truest form. I encourage them to be themselves whether that is how they dress, where we have their session, or what props they bring. I want them to feel joy with each session and leave feeling loved and beautiful. I strive for my photos to convey the beauty that each person has and the emotion between couples.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I remember pulling up a chair next to my mom in the study while she edited photos and told me about technicalities within photography such as the rule of thirds and not cropping around joints. She would let me tag along to sessions and hold the reflector just right to get the light in her client’s eyes. Fast forward to 2020 and I mentored under a close friend and photographer who took me under her wing as I was her second shooter for weddings. She helped me fine tune composition and understand more about editing. She encouraged me to go out on my own and chase this passion I had developed. I’ve been practicing photography for three years now. This summer I decided to resign from my job as a high school teacher so that I can grow my photography business and be home with my son who will be one in August.
Currently, I am continuing to grow and learn more about this craft through podcasts and resources by my photography role models such as Cassidy Lynne and Nathan Chanski. I am breaking into the world of weddings and continuing with senior portraits. I have a team of senior reps that I am excited to announce this summer, and I can’t wait to see where God takes me in the next year.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
This is an interesting question because I am in the middle of the transition between side-hustle and full time. Taking a leap of faith and transitioning my side-hustle into my primary career is a scary feat. I remember sitting in college classes hearing professors say that most new educators leave the career within 5 years of starting. My stubborn personality and my pride told myself over and over “that will not be me.” What I did not take into consideration with that statistic is that life happens and circumstances change. I taught at the junior high level for two years, moved to Texas and taught two years of Senior English. My son was born in August of 2022, and I spent so much of this previous school year wishing I had more flexibility to be there when he needed. He was really the catalyst that pushed me to make the decision to leave education and be home with him. My husband has been my ultimate encourager, and he speaks so much positivity over my dreams and skills.
With all the kind words from my family and friends, and seeing God open doors and provide new opportunities, I am confident in Macey Alexander Photography.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The best strategy for growing my clientele has been putting myself out there and making connections. I had to get over the fear of imposter syndrome and learn that people want to know you care about then beyond their dollar. I recently made contact with Jaden McGrew, a content creator here in Texas. She and her husband modeled a styled photo session with me. It has been such a fun opportunity and way to meet people and open new doors. Another instance where I reached out helped me make so many connections. I also was able to take branding pictures for a new wedding venue, The diamond at Star E Ranch in Crumby, TX. I initiated contact with the owner, Sonia, and it led to being a part of the venue’s open house and two weddings on my calendar!
I think it is important as a newer business to not be afraid of failure or people saying no. If there is an opportunity, go for it! You never know if something will come of it immediately or down the road.
