We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Molly Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Molly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Being able to make a career as an actor is continually rewarding and I could not imagine my life any other way. While the hustle is hard being able to wake up and do what I love is truly worth it. I find genuine happiness when I am on stage and working on theatrical production.
Every so often I think about what it would be like to have a “regular” job and I just know that it would not be something I flourish in. My lifestyle and work ethic would make it hard to sit at a desk or work the typical 9 to 5 grind.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an actor who was born and raised in New York and am currently living in Nashville, TN. I fell in love with musical theater at a young age and got my BA in Theater Performance from Wagner College. Post college I found myself in the music industry writing and performing original works. About a year ago I jumped back into the theater scene and have been working consistently since. I find love and joy in children’s theater and passion in bringing different stories to life, What sets me apart from others is that I got my Masters in Social Work from Fordham University. This degree has helped me both on and off stage. I have been able to connect with the characters I am performing in a way that I previously couldn’t have. It also makes me a great advocate and team player. The entertainment industry can be a difficult one but I truly believe that there is space and a place for everyone.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me I love the opportunity to transport an audience to somewhere new. Theater can be a great escape from the busy world we live in. It can also be a great space to feel emotions and relate to characters you see on stage. You truly never know the impact you are having on an audience member but at the end of the day you know that even if it is just for an hour or so you are able to create a space for people to live in the moment of live theater. That feeling is magic.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Buy tickets, see live theater, and continue to invest in the arts for our next generation. There are so many benefits that we gain as a society from a thriving creative ecosystem. Children are able to use imaginative play and theater and the arts is an extension of that framework. The benefits of the arts is inexpressible!
