We were lucky to catch up with Miranda Duane recently and have shared our conversation below.
Miranda, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Art and creativity have always been a big theme in my life. As far back as I can remember, I was always making something or learning a new craft. I think it was inevitable that I would end up in a field full of creatives. I can’t pinpoint when it was that I made the decision that I was going to do photography and art as my career. It came from within me as I became bored of the daily 9-5 grind. Mainly to distract me from the monotony but also because I loved doing it so much, and people were showing interest in what I was creating. So, as I prepared to leave my job to explore new opportunities, it seemed only natural to migrate into Portrait Photography and Art as my primary sources of income. I now own two businesses and balance my time between them, fulfilling all of my creative aspirations in the process.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
On the surface, I am a Photographer or an Artist, depending on where you meet me. Beyond that, I am just Miranda, someone who craves nature and the small moments. I’m always searching for the people and places that feel like home. When I’m not working, you can usually find me and at least 3 of my fur children curled up on the couch with a coffee in hand. If I’m not doing that, I’m walking on a random trail leading to nowhere. After all, it’s all about the journey and not the destination. Right?
My approach to photography may be different compared to some. I personally don’t like things to feel too posed or forced, nor do I want to put too much pressure on the person I’m photographing. Bad experiences lead to bad memories when looking at photos, so I make each session as fun and laid back as possible. I want it to feel like you’re just hanging out with a friend. I love to explore with my clients and find cool spots along the way!
I believe my love for the little things is what pulled me towards photography. Being able to capture a moment that will never again be repeated or documented the same way is a powerful thing. Each photographer, model, and moment are unique in their own way. That is what drives me to continue to follow my endeavors. Being able to produce a photo that makes someone feel a certain way or helps to boost a person’s confidence makes it all worth it for me. I am someone who personally struggles with self-love and the way I perceive myself. I am not someone who is considered traditionally beautiful or attractive, which is something I have always struggled with. Due to that, I am a person who sees the beauty in everyone and appreciates each person’s individuality. When I am photographing someone, all I see is the beauty in front of my lens, and I try to create something for my clients that represents them in their purest form.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As a self-employed individual, there is a stigma that people think you don’t want to work or are not working. When in reality, you are always working. Being the sole driving force of a business means that every job is now your job. You are not only the boss, but you’re also doing the customer service, scheduling, accounting, managing, etc. Balancing work and a social life is hard when you have no set schedule. I find it challenging to make the time to do the things I enjoy. I am constantly on the road, whether it’s traveling to photoshoots or going to conventions and markets to sell and promote my art. The other significant stress with being self-employed is feeling like you need to do more, or if the business fails, it’s all on you. It’s a constant internal struggle, but it fuels me to push through, continue to make strides, and accomplish my goals!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing for both my photography and my art businesses is seeing someone’s reaction to what you’re creating and the joy it brings them. Whether it is producing a priceless photo of a client, documenting a big event, or making a piece of art that speaks to them. My number one goal is to spark happiness in people who come in contact with the things I’m doing and creating! Without that there is no reason to provide my services to people. Through the support and encouragement of my peers and clients, I’m able to see my full potential and grow as a creative which is what fulfills me the most.
