We were lucky to catch up with Marilyn Barker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marilyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
When I first started my own small business, I felt overwhelmed and alone. It seemed that there were very few people who truly wanted to help me. Most just wanted to make a profit and they were not very interested in helping me succeed. It took me a lot of time, money, failures and tears but I pressed on. My mission is to be affordable and honestly help other small businesses be successful. I provide my services for those who need them the most. I do not want anyone who is just starting out to feel like they are alone. My goal is to guide and assist others in the hope that they don’t have to make the same mistakes I did.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My background is in sales. I started my own business over 15 years ago to be home with my daughter. Over the years, I have moved towards helping other small businesses succeed. My services range from online business education, such has software, marketing, branding, etc. to mindfulness and mindset. We help solve the problem of people feeling alone and unable to move forward both personally and professionally. I care about lifting others up and supporting them in a welcoming environment. I am proud of the network I have built to support and encourage others, who are living the dream of being a small business owner. I have faced many difficulties in both my personal life and business life, so I know the trials and tribulations many people encounter and feel this helps me provide a unique perspective.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Following up with Clients is essential. I do this by having a social media group and posting consistently. I have an email list that I guard and only send out a small number of updates/follow-ups, so as to not overwhelm my clients. I stay true to my brand by always being authentic and asking questions of what my client needs are and adjusting to provide resources if possible.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have built my social media presence by being real and consisted across all my platforms. I provide a place to build relationships and trust. Putting others first by providing tips, and information on a variety of topics. I find that people are looking for more value and less fluff. My advice to those just starting out on social media, is be real and give more than you get. Stay true to your values and your brand.
