We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leanna DeBellevue a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Leanna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
If I didn’t have an amazing boss I would not be where I am today. I had a boss that saw my potential. I was doing marketing for his company and he pulled me aside and told me the believed that I had what it takes to start my own company. He told me that I would always have a safe place to land if it didn’t work out but that he saw in me the drive and passion it took to be a business owner.
He saw possibility where I didn’t and instead of keeping me on his staff to continue growing his business he gave me the gift of helping me take that first step.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an international speaker, global marketing agency owner, social media strategist and co-author of the Amazon International bestseller Light At The End Of The Funnel, a practical guide for business owners who are ready to step into success.
As owner of DeBellevue Global Marketing Agency, our team has helped clients from over 19 countries generate millions of dollars in sales using social media to connect and engage with their target markets. The companies we have worked with range from global conglomerates to real estate moguls and individual business owners looking to reach new untapped markets. The company is in its 13th year proving its ability to withstand the ups and downs digital marketing firms face.
I have spoken in front of thousands of entrepreneurs, business leaders and decision-makers from over 13 countries on topics ranging from overcoming success blockers to implementing social media strategies and business growth hacks. I have written for HuffPost and was a guest speaker on podcasts by Iheartradio, Real Estate, and Health Coach Academy among several others. She is also a 2020-2021 Council Member for Forbes Magazine. Most recently she has been inducted into the Who’s Who in America by Marquis Publication Board for 2023.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Communication, communication, communication! It is imperative within our company that we communicate about struggles, opportunities for growth, as well as wins! We find things to celebrate and always look for things to be positive about. When things go wrong we reverse engineer it so that we ensure that whatever areas for improvement are addressed. When you create a culture that focuses on problem solving it helps people feel empowered and helps with morale.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There is one speech and one book that transformed the way I think about business and leadership. “The Man in the Arena” – by Theodore Roosevelt. It helped me understand that the opinions that matter are those of others who are also striving to make an impact, who take big risks and who are actually doing the work. So often there are keyboard warriors who have no problem giving their opinions when they would never dare take the risks that we do as business owners.
The book that made a big impact is Straight Line Leadership. This is a great book that doesn’t sugar coat the responsibilities that true leaders need to take to get traction within their business.
