We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful LeShana Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with LeShana below.
LeShana , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Create healthy relationships and maintain rapports that will last.
Prior to me starting my business I worked at a healthcare company where my last role was a Learning Development Specialist Sr. During my time as a specialist, I had the opportunity to partner with different departments to develop and deliver trainings. I met people with different roles and personalities, which made my day-to-day work interesting.
While getting to know co-workers in other areas in the company, I was able to build relationships and share my world with them, while they shared theirs with me. After being on maternity leave, I took the leap to resign from the healthcare company to spend more time with my family and eventually start my life coaching business. But the relationships that were built, did not stay with my last role.
It has been years since I’ve left the company but over the years, I’ve witnessed past co-workers and friends, becoming great supporters and even clients in my business. I believe this was from the strength of our past relationships.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sure, I was born and raised in Syracuse, NY where I completed my Bachelor of Science in Communication in Rhetorical Studies from Syracuse University. After school I moved to Alexandria, VA to pursue a career in Communications with plans to further my education. In the mix of transitioning to a new state and season in life, I met my now husband in Miami. Later I moved to Savannah Ga where he finished school and started his career and then we moved to Tampa, Fl, where we currently reside with our two sons.
Shortly after moving to Tampa, I became certified as a life coach to follow my lifelong passion of helping people problem solve and navigate challenging seasons in their life. Naturally, I enjoyed learning about a person and their aspirations while helping them to identify the roadblocks that may “try” to stop them from moving forward in life.
Although I obtained my life coaching certification, I didn’t start my actual business until six years later. I ended up going back to school to get my MBA in healthcare management but after graduating, I knew there was more that I was called to do, and that was to start the business.
At first, I lacked the courage to move forward with the next steps and felt stuck and uncertain for a period of time. However, I worked through these challenges and realized that great things take time with help. In 2021, Be Bold and Courageous Coaching was birthed and that is where I took a leap of faith to believe in my God given gifts and vision to share with others.
Be Bold and Courageous is more than just a name; it’s a message for anyone who may be fearful, doubtful, or worried about pursuing their dreams and goals. We all experience challenges and roadblocks when growing to the next level in life. However, by being Bold and Courageous, one step at a time, you can build confidence along the journey and reach new heights.
In my coaching and consulting business, I offer customized 1-to-1 coaching plans where I guide the client to identify the top three areas in their life that they want to Focus on and grow in. Once these areas are identified, we create a game plan to achieve their goals and overcome barriers such as fear, time mismanagement, doubt, and worry.
Throughout the year, I host workshops on vision panning, goal setting and staying focused on what truly matters. Additionally, I am starting to partner with organizations to speak on the topics of vision and focus.
I am most proud when I witness my clients growing to the next level and achieving their goals. Seeing individuals gain clarity, motivation, and progress with encouragement brings me great joy.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe having hands on experience is most helpful in succeeding in my field. Although I have degrees, certifications and book smarts, nothing beats experience.
Having the tools ( training and knowledge) is great but applying the tools to everyday business and practice is how to grow and get better.
While building my business there have been learning lessons and curves that I wouldn’t take back because it has helped me to understand that business is not about me but about serving others and listening to their needs.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I would say the top three books that have helped shift my mindset in business are:
The 7 habits of highly effective people (Stephen R. Covey)
Atomic Habits (James Clear)
The 12 week year (Brian P. Morgan)
