Charnelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
The key to success is persistence, network, and passion. An individual passion is determine how far they’re going to go. Without passion , what is the reason for pursuing ?
Persistence and balance going to help you keep you align and grounded. There are going to be days where you do not want to shoot, not inspired, and feel hopeless. You have to know why you are doing this.
The journey can be overwhelming, overstimulating, and its easy to get distracted and listen to the white noise” . Everything you desire is on the other side. Take a break, but never stop!
Keep going!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Around 2014-2015, i was unemployed, and trying to find employment in the biomedical field. It was really rough year for me . I contemplated whether to continue pursuing biomedical, or start something new and exciting. I have always been creative person; however, never explore the field as an option. I would reminisce on the my spring break in college. I use to go to New York frequently, fell in love with fashion. I began reaching out to people in the industry to receive some insight. I would receive no response after emailing & dm DMV Fashion Stylists, in hope to gain exposure. I was really discourage! My heart was in creative+fashion field.
My cousin Shinika and Fashion Designer friend Shan suggested curate editorial look books, and went on from
there.
From curating lookbooks , becoming a fashion blogger, creating content creation to now fashion stylist, i have excel with to no experience within the fashion realm . My work has been shown on Baltimore billboards twice, international magazine publications. Ive been asked to be feature on GOOD MORNING DC, as well as, an applicant for Wardrobe stylist assistant position for NFL.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I could not utilize the same methods and technical skills in the biomedical to tackle the fashion industry. With biomedical field, the industry is more straightforward , structured, routine, “by the book”. Fashion is all about networking ! You can have talent or no talent, its all about who you know. The circle is real small . You have to be proactive, flexible, and open to new ideas.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
As a former blogger & content creator, i was shooting twice month ( 5 outfits per shoot). I used to shoot in 30degree to 84 degree weather. I started using hashtags, in addition creating lifestyle videos on YOUTUBE to receive more visibility starting out. Recently, I have use hashtags, reels, post in my stories in real time for my lifestyle content. The key is to be consistent and mix up your content. My friends and followers like seeing me create content vs styling models. You definitely have to know your audience!
