Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lakeisha Green. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lakeisha , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
In 2003 I moved to Lafayette, LA. In that I was new to the area I had no clue about the area or job opportunities at the entry level. However. always knew counseling was my calling. I took a chance and reached out to a family friend who was a Director of Drug Court at the time. She took a chance on me and I became a CIT and have been practicing in substance abuse since.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always had a passion to help people. I aim to be impactful to anyone I come in contact with. At a very young age, my parents divorced as a result of my dads addiction. There were many life changes, but the constant was my desire to help others. I started as a peer mediator in 5th grade and continued through high school. The oldest child of 9, I attended La Tech University but was unable to complete my undergrad requirements due to financial constraints. In 2003 I became a Counselor In Training and my love for the field continued to grow. I obtained my Life Coach certification and my Registered Addiction Counselor certification in 2021. I have been so lucky to work for a company that has allowed me to learn and grow and obtain additional skills to prepare me for my future as a Licensed counselor.
I started my business Talk is Cheap in 2022 providing Life Coaching and Relationship coaching sessions. Within the company I am able to educate clients and families on addiction, through individual and group sessions as it relates to substance abuse. We also offer life coaching sessions guiding individuals through their “stuck” moments while offering clarity to their lives to be the best version of themselves. Relationship coaching is also offered providing individual and couples sessions within the 6-8 week program designed according to the couples needs.
Talk is Cheap was birthed to help bridge communication gaps and increase self efficacy. I have endured many storms throughout my journey. My story allows me the opportunity to lift other’s up and out of life’s hardships. Knowing that your story is also someone else’s story and showing them that they can overcome is what Talk is Cheap is about. You can’t just talk about it you MUST put some action behind the words to bring out change.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I am a proud wife and mother of 5. I have been in pursuit of my Bachelors degree in Psychology since 2001! Life definitely threw some curve balls but I am proud to say I have never given up. I will obtain my degree in 1 month. I am currently completing my last quarter with Capella University to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology w/ Minor in Substance abuse!! #DelayedNotDenied
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Personal experience is the best teacher but there are some skills required in this field that a book or training can’t teach you. To be compassionate towards others or to possess leadership skills are not obtained through training those are natural qualities needed for the mental health field.
