We recently connected with Michael Piercy and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
As a kid growing up, I always had an active interest in Physical fitness and would read fitness books hoping to learn and get tips. At age 15 for my first job, my mom walked into a big box gym and asked if I could have a job since I enjoyed fitness that much. That began my journey into the fitness world.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My career in this industry has been multi-faceted, to say the least. I consider myself a lifer in the fitness industry having started in the industry at the age of 15 years old. I receive my first fitness certification at a young age and have worked in this industry ever since. Flash forward to 1999 I began a career in professional baseball, which allowed me to both pursue my dreams but also get a working knowledge of what it is like to work with elite athletes.
Following a career in baseball, I returned to my passion for the fitness and performance industry opening The LAB (Performance and Sports Science) in Fairfield, NJ. The LAB has been open for over 11+ years and is a State of the art performance facility serving athletes of all Levels.
In my career, I have had the honor of representing major brands such as Under Armour, TRX, American Council of Exercise, and many others.
One of my proudest moments in my career was being selected as the 2017 Personal Trainer of the Year by IDEA Health & Fitness Association.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
As with most fitness business owners a few years ago we were faced with turbulent times due to the worldwide Pandemic (Covid-19). With government-mandated shutdowns and strict health regulations, we were forced to pivot and utilize alternative means to serve our member base.
With perseverance, we were able to still serve our clients and athletes to the best of our abilities and able to survive and thrive to re-opening. During this time one of our proudest moments was to be featured by New Jersey Governor as one the shining lights during this rough time for everyone in our state.
Flash forward following the pandemic and rebounding to a positive re-opening our facility was completely flooded during Hurricane IDA. Following the previous years and shutdowns, I would have to say that this was a major blow to the system and more catastrophically to our bottom line.
One of the proudest heartfelt moments during this time is having an industry I love so much go to bat for me and many fitness professionals donate their time and resources to crowdfunding that helped us get back on our feet and back to serving our athletes and community.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I feel that what has helped me build a reputation in our market is authenticity. As a former pro athlete, I genuinely love working with athletes of all levels and want to see them rise to the realization of their talents and goals. I feel we are successful and continue to be successful in our market because we are athlete obsessed. We are always looking for ways that we can be better in order to provide the best tools, techniques, and experiences to our clientele.
