We recently connected with Kolbie Bartholomew and have shared our conversation below.
Kolbie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
I remember the first nickel I earned as a creative. At seven years old, my best friend, Amy, and I worked really hard coloring pictures. We used our best colors and stayed inside all the lines. Perhaps I wasn’t talented enough to draw the images myself, but I had fun and thought they turned out really nice. So nice that maybe someone would like to buy one to decorate with. So Amy and I took to the streets on her banana-seat bike and knocked on neighbors’ doors. We asked for five cents each, but a few people paid extra. I don’t think we got a whole dollar, and they probably just thought we were cute. But we really did have fun and were rewarded for something we enjoyed doing. That’s what I’ve been trying to do all this time.

Kolbie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a nature and landscape photographer, I’m inspired by beautiful places and beautiful spaces. I believe that we can transform ourselves by transforming our surroundings. So I seek out

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Adaptability is an asset, whether in business or in life. The only thing certain is change. That’s why being a life-long learner is so important. I’m continuously educating myself, setting new goals, and experimenting with new ways of doing things. An example is learning to use new cameras. My early education was on 35mm film, which I had to process in a darkroom. Then I had to learn how to use a digital camera and process images electronically. Now I’ve learned how to fly a drone and become a licensed pilot. This led me to another life pivot last fall, when I joined the aviation team at Utah Valley University last fall. My creative and business journeys seem to go hand in hand, and my ability to change helps me move forward.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Art is a tool for personal and collective transformation. The process of creation helps me grow and motivates me to keep going. First, I’m connecting with nature. I’m fully present. I’m intentionally seeking out fleeting moments and finding magic in the mundane. I’m appreciating how the darkness makes the light brighter. How a new perspective can change everything. I’m learning lessons and receiving inspiration that I later pour into the images I create. But art isn’t meant to stay in a dark room. So I share my passion and my process. By sharing, I can inspire others to transform their own lives. Art is the tool that helps us do that.
