We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abby Luebbert. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abby below.
Abby, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Let’s start with the basics here! My name is Abby Luebbert, and I own my interior design studio called Heirloom Design Company. Here’s a bit of background on how the name of my company came to be:
I spent a lot of time deciding on the name of my business…any by a lot of time, I actually mean years! In a way, I think I really started developing my brand’s identity before I even knew that I wanted to start my own interior design studio. The name of my company is something I really wanted to take pride in, so I gave it a good deal of thought before making a final decision. If I had to sum it up easily in 3 keys ideas, here was my thought process: I chose 3 words that communicated the type of business I have, my business’ brand identity, and a glimpse of something personally important to me.
Before starting my studio, I knew that I didn’t want to create designs for just any homes–I wanted to create timeless, lasting designs that were rooted in classic styles and quality craftsmanship. In other words, I wanted to create home designs that were going to stand the test of time, and not simply be apart of another fad or trend that came and went. Interior design is also a deeply personal field, and I knew that I was going to get to know my clients very well. So with these 2 ideas in mind- creating timeless, quality designs that are grounded in the hopes and dreams of my clients- I knew that I wanted my company’s name to reflect these core values.
After seeking inspiration and several rounds of deliberating, I landed on “Heirloom” as the perfect word to encapsulate everything that I hope my business stands for. In common use, “Heirloom” denotes something of importance that is passed down from one generation to another, and I absolutely love the idea of helping my clients to create a home that they would want to pass on to their loved ones. I am also very interested in working with clients who value quality and craftsmanship in their homes, and are open to putting the time and investment necessary into creating a truly bespoke and meaningful space.
As for the “Company” part, that was a little bit easier but still very intentional. In the interior design world, it’s very common for designers to name their studio after themselves (i.e. designer’s name + studio, etc); and while there is nothing wrong with that, I knew that I have hopes for my studio to represent more than simply myself and what I can offer. I’m still figuring out exactly what that growth and development looks like, but I’m happy to know that I can easily incorporate changes and people into my business as needed.
To give some personal context, I’ve always felt drawn to the world of interior design and decoration, and I think this started at a young age when I would go to open houses with my mom (just for fun!) and we would dream about what it would be like to live in a cool old house together. She would walk me through the spaces and point out things that were beautiful, things that made each house special, or things that were historically relevant. I think this is where I really started developing my interest for interior design that is rooted in timeless, historically progressive designs and quality craftsmanship, and that interest has carried all the way through to become my personal motivation for my studio’s branding and services.

Abby, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After nurturing a life-long love of historic interiors, growing up in a family devoted to the home industry, and developing my interior design knowledge, I opened Heirloom Design Company in 2021 and continue to learn and flourish as my studio grows. As a designer, I prioritize creating meaningful relationships with my clients in order to craft truly bespoke designs that they will cherish for years to come.
For me, home is personal; it is emotional; it is something worth investing our care and attention into. And while many in the home industry focus solely on creating beautiful spaces, I also aim to understand and respect the nuances and dreams of my clients as much as I attend to the technical and creative aspects of their home designs.
The most meaningful homes always reflect those who live them, and Heirloom Design Company is my way of helping homeowners create truly bespoke spaces that they are proud to call their own.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As an interior designer, I have to strike a really nice balance between being creative and technically knowledgeable; for example, if I’m designing a kitchen, I have to focus on creating a design plan that will “wow” my clients, but that will also feasibly work within the overall project’s design scope and budget. From the creative perspective, I think I’m most rewarded by those projects that allow me to push my limits and grow both creatively and technically. There is something really gratifying about being able to take on a project that includes design features I haven’t worked on before, and then walking into the new space several months down the road and thinking, “wow, I’m actually really impressed with how this turned out!” even though I had to do a lot of professional development to get there.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I honestly don’t think I would have ever garnered the motivation or bravery it took to start my own business without reading “The Four Hour Workweek” first. Although I don’t utilize every piece of advice from this book, it really helped me to find the motivation I needed to get the ball rolling and Just. Get. Started! Along with helping to inspire me along an entrepreneurial path, it has also been instrumental in providing a “north star” of sorts that keeps me personally in check with why I started my business in the first place.
