We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex DeYoung. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.
Alex, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
MagneticHeart Guitar Works the name was a long-time coming. I’ve wanted to be a guitar builder ever since putting my first kit together with my dad. From that point on; I was sketching designs and names in notebooks. I landed on the name MagneticHeart in 2016/2017 when I realized that electricity and the pickups are essentially the beating heart of any electric guitar. The name was catchy, unique, and not currently in use, and from that point MagneticHeart Guitar Works was born.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been playing guitar since my early teens, and started tinkering and modifying them not long after. I built my first kit with my dad at 16, and have been hooked ever since. My business centers around custom guitars, modifications, and repairs. I like to tell my customers that any idea is worth attempting; which has led me to build an axe guitar, a guitar built from corian countertop material, and a handful of beautiful cigar box guitars. My goal with our custom guitars is to bring you the most comfortable guitar you’ve ever played. To that end; I hand shape all of my guitar necks to the end user’s hand.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
The bodies and necks are hand crafted quite literally in house. I build out of my basement/back yard with basic woodworking tools. I want to avoid CNC manufacturing of my wood components as long as possible because I believe that building them by hand allows me to connect with the essence of the finished instrument. I source all the hardware from existing manufacturers because there’s no real reason to get into fabricating or manufacturing the hardware.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
MagneticHeart Guitar Works is still a very young business; in spite of having been a dream for twenty years. Because of the youth of the business; I’m still getting a handle on funding the business. The biggest source of funding is pouring any profit back into the business and cutting expenses by not over extending my purchasing capability in an effort to scale the business before it’s ready to support that growth.
