We were lucky to catch up with DeJonna Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DeJonna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Working in the film industry is so rewarding. I have had a chance over the last ten years to work with some of the most talented creatives. I wish that I would have started a lot sooner. I enjoy it and can’t see my life without making films.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is DeJonna Williams. I am an award-winning film producer based in Cleveland, Ohio. With a passion for storytelling and a love for theater. I got my start in the film industry when I was cast in my first film in 2012. From there, I knew that I wanted to work behind the scenes and began my journey as a production assistant.
Working her way up the ladder, I became a Unit Production Manager and then a Film Producer. I won several awards over the years, including the prestigious “One Shot Challenge” from NBC/Universal for the film “The Wedding Runner”. I was on an amazing team that won three 48 Hour Film Projects and over 15 other awards from this competition. We were also a Semi-Finalist for the Burbank International Film Festival for her film “Don’t tell Mama”. We have won several awards for other project. It has been an awarding experience!
As the Vice President of Women in Film & Television Ohio, I am committed to advancing women in the film and television industry. I believe that everyone deserves a chance to tell their story through film, regardless of their background or experience.
As a film producer, I provides a range of services including project development, budgeting, scheduling, casting, location scouting, and post-production. I am known for her ability to work efficiently and effectively within budget constraints and for finding creative solutions to complex problems. I am committed to delivering exceptional results and creating meaningful films that resonate with audiences.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is my dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion. I am proud of the work that the projects I have been on, and organization I am apart of has done to create a more inclusive and diverse film community. Potential clients, followers, and fans should know that I am passionate about my work and committed to delivering exceptional results. I am always looking for new and exciting projects to work on and is excited to collaborate with others who share the vision for creating compelling and meaningful films.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
One of my favorite masterclasses that I had to the chance to take was given by none other than Shonda Rhimes, the creator of hit TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder. In her masterclass, Shonda shares her insights and wisdom on writing, storytelling, and the creative process.
What I find inspiring about Shonda is her incredible work ethic. She is known for her ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines while still delivering exceptional work. In her masterclass, she emphasizes the importance of discipline, hard work, and perseverance in achieving success.
One of the key takeaways from Shonda’s masterclass is her emphasis on the power of storytelling. She believes that stories have the ability to change the world and that it is the responsibility of writers to use their platform to tell meaningful and impactful stories.
Shonda’s masterclass has inspired me to approach my own work with discipline, focus, and a commitment to excellence. Her dedication to her craft and her willingness to take risks and push boundaries has motivated me to strive for greatness in my own work.
Overall, Shonda’s masterclass is a must-watch for anyone who is passionate about storytelling and the creative process. Her insights and wisdom are invaluable, and her work ethic is truly inspiring.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As a woman in the film industry, my particular goal and mission driving my creative journey is to use my platform and skills as a film producer to tell stories that are often overlooked and underrepresented in mainstream media. I want to be a voice for marginalized communities, including black women, and use my art to challenge stereotypes and promote positive representation and diversity in the industry. My mission is to create a space where people from all backgrounds can see themselves reflected on screen and to inspire others to do the same, both in front of and behind the camera. I believe that by telling stories that are authentic and inclusive, we can create a more equitable and just society, and I am committed to using my creativity to make a positive impact.
