We were lucky to catch up with Heather Dickey recently and have shared our conversation below.

Heather, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

I host a weekly podcast called Totally Mackinac Island. The idea didn’t start off with a podcast. Initially I wanted to do a blog about Mackinac. I started that and realized blogging is not my thing. I share better by talking. Podcasts have become my go too since the pandemic. Originally I had been doing another podcast in a little bit of everything yet every other week I was talking about Mackinac Island. So after a visit to the island and not loving blogging but I wanted to share all I can as a tourist to help those visiting the island- Totally Mackinac Island Podcast was born.

I fell in love with Mackinac after my first visit. I would do girl trips, family, and even a solo trip. Shared constantly all I could with anyone who asked what I knew about the island. I loved when people would reach out to me asking for any tips. Having the podcast has allowed me to not only share what I know BUT everything new I learn.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

I live in Northern Indiana. I am a hairstylist of 26 years (eek). So talkingbis definitely in my background. Back in 2020 when the world shut down I needed something else to do besides watch tv. I began listening to podcasts. Ironically one created from 2 girls in Indiana – Crime Junkie. This became a huge way for me to stay busy yet learn something. I then started listening to other shows.

When the podcast started I didn’t have an idea of what all I could share along with is there enough to share. Turns out it became an easy process. The show also took a turn when I began interviewing people affiliated with the island in some way whether living, working, have worked or visited. This allowed me to meet so many people on Mackinac. I loved having this connection. It made my love of this place grow even deeper.

I have exciting stuff coming up for the podcast. Working on a new website to help share the information on the show better. There is still so much to share about this island in Michigan and I have only just begun.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

My goal for Totally Mackinac Island Podcast is to be able to have so much information for a newbie or veteran of going to the island. I still learn something new every week I air the show. Also a huge shoutout to those who have been so kind and reached out constantly to share anything they see or know for me to share. It is not just my love but so many others.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

I will be honest- I love all the listeners of this show. I swear people who love Mackinac as I do are the best. Mackinac Island allows you to “Disconnect while reconnecting” as I always say. Anyone on the island who I meet and interview not only loves to share their story but connect you with others on the island as well.
