We recently connected with Patricia “Patches” Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Patricia “Patches” thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most rewarding and meaningful projects I have worked on and coordinated was creating a book club. Something so simple and an idea that came to me one day has become such a passion project. I have been a reader most of my life, but when COVID lock down came about I decided to read more seriously, and found a huge community of readers like myself who dabbled a bit in their childhood, but didn’t consider it a hobby. I noticed, however, a large part of the community was not reading some of the non-fiction books I was interested in. Where were all the macabre books about death? The black plague? Weird dark science, and true crime? I knew I wanted to make a book club, but how exactly would I combine all of my weird requests? I landed on the name, The Morbidly Curious Book Club, and without looking back launched it. Almost 2 years later, I’m sitting at almost 7000 members on our site BookClubs.com, and a wonderful community of like-minded morbid readers. I love bringing everyone together once a month to discuss our latest read, and I love showing people that non-fiction books aren’t always dry and boring. We’ve heard many touching stories, and had hour long conversations about ghosts and the afterlife, and how fascinating these subjects are. We’ve theorized unsolved true crime stories and cults, we’ve cried over lost loved ones, and thanked the books for giving us a place to talk.
Patricia “Patches”, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Patricia Brown, I am from and currently live in beautiful North Carolina with my partner and our 5, yes 5, cats. (Ask me again in a year, we will probably have more.) I went to Western Carolina University to pursue my passion for filmmaking, moved out to Los Angeles, CA around 2017 to work in television, and decided once COVID hit it was time to come home. My hobbies have always been all over the place, but ultimately I loved telling and consuming stories. I’m very proud of myself for how far along I have come. Being an arts student and wanting to be in a field where jobs are hard to come by, I’ve accomplished so much and I need to remind myself every day that I’ve done a lot! When I lived in Los Angeles, CA I started making Tik Tok videos about true crime, and over night went viral. A couple years later I was just shy of 900,000 followers, and had a podcast, was a host on another podcast, was a talking head in a TV show I Met My Murderer Online, got the chance to be in 3 Tubi original documentaries: “Famously Haunted: Amityville,” “Suburban Nightmare: The Menendez Brothers,” and “Mystery Unsolved: The Adnan Syed Story.” I was a part of Crime Con Las Vegas, where I got the chance to meet incredible people in the true crime space, such as Chris Hansen and Paul Holes. Currently I work for another company making Tik Tok videos for them, and maintain my own accounts discussing my latest favorite reads.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’d love for The Morbidly Curious Book Club to hit 10,000 members by 2024, and be featured on some popular social space and create an even larger space for more members to come in. I’d love to eventually have a podcast, or be invited to a podcast, where I talk with authors writing macabre morbidly curious non-fiction books. I think this is a completely obtainable goal! Working every day to make it happen.
How did you build your audience on social media?
One of the most important things in gaining a following on social media is understanding what you’re wanting to tell people. Finding your niche is key. Along that comes consistency, scheduling, and maintaining a balance in making sure your audience gets what they came for. All algorithms work with you as long as you’re on top of it! It’s much harder than it looks sometimes, and sometimes you’re not going to want to create content. It happens to everyone. But making sure you’re portraying properly to your audience what exactly you want to tell is going to be step 1.
