We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Val / John McKissick / Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Val / John, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Our biggest unexpected issue is definitely setting up at events we go set up a vendor booth at. It’s been interesting going through the process if figuring out what works best for us, especially for outdoor events. You don’t really realize how stressful it can be to find a good way to display everything and be prepared for weather conditions whether it be temperature, rain, or our latest endeavor had us fighting with the wind all day. We always manage to have a good time and meet so many amazing people though so it’s always a good learning experience to figure out something new that we can do better at the next one!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We started out with an interest in crystals and their energy. We’re both intrigued by all the ways they can be beneficial to work with. We started wire wrapping around the same time and were both excited to help others learn about the stones properties and bring their energy into their lives. We try to provide specific information on each crystal when we know what we’re wrapping. Everything we make is unique – no two pieces will ever be exactly alike, so what you get is special to you. We’ve now expanded into other types of art we’ve taken interests in such as painting, creating wands, and crochet.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
We really love getting to meet all the people who stop to look at our art at the events we go to. We’ve been to some really incredible places and met some amazing people. Knowing the ones who acquired one of our pieces are going home with something unique that they connected with the energy of is really cool.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Something neither of us really expected was that a lot of times the art makes itself. No matter what you’re doing – painting, wire wrapping, etc – almost nothing ever turns out exactly as you first picture it. We’ve noticed this discouraging a lot of people in the art world lately but we believe it to be a beautiful part of the journey to discovering your own unique approach to expressing yourself through creativity.
