We recently connected with Rica Nadine and have shared our conversation below.
Rica , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses
Family businesses are not for the weak at heart. Dealing with family and business requires strategy and patience. I have had the pleasure of owning and starting many businesses with my family in the digital media industry. While it seems easy because most families have boundaries and they know each other. It can become challenging because business is about supply, demand, and profit. Family businesses have an upper hand because there is a level of trust, discipline, and tradition which is everything people love about families in business together. Just know that it isn’t for everyone.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So for those who don’t know me, Im Rica Nadine, emcee/brand ambassador/CEO/digital creator/red carpet host/model, and author. This may sound like a lot of jobs/titles but it didn’t come easily. So let’s start with how I became a model. I was taking my senior high school pictures and it came out really good. Then magazines started reaching out to me to submit my portfolio. I started 7 Tribe Media when I saw a need for more female representation in the Christian Hip Hop industry. So in the midst of the pandemic, God gave me a vision of a company that will cover all the digital media needs from radio to tv. I started with 7 Tribe Radio and it expanded to 7 Tribe Media. 7 Tribe Media is a Christian digital broadcasting platform that covers all your digital media needs from Radio, Ads to Tv. I started an eyelash company in the fall of 2020 as well, called Nae Nae Lashes. I started Nae Nae lashes because I think that the eye/ eyelashes are one of the most important parts of any makeup routine. Eyelashes can take you from soft glam to Hollywood glam. I have also been afforded many opportunities to host events and red carpets from Dove Awards to the OWR Awards. I am so blessed and thankful for my journey thus far and hope to continue to expand my reach.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
At the beginning of my journey, I wish I would have adopted the sense of mentorship. People take mentorship lightly but it can change the whole trajectory of your business and journey. Mentorship establishes not only connections in the said industry but also experience. If I would have adopted a mentor early on, some of the things I have gone through. I would have had more strategic ways of dealing with the issues. Get you a MENTOR ASAP.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I learned sometime back was ” Become the version of yourself that will inspire nations of people”. This lesson taught me that it may not be a 7-figure business right but eventually it will. What I really learned from this lesson was to be the change in someone’s else life. Create that product that will change something in someone’s routine or even make their life easier. Most of the time people get into business for profit. I got into business to be a change in this world. Whether that be with a product I am selling or just talking/ being nice to a person. Simple things go a long way. I encourage you to research the industry but also do some soul-seeking.
