Alright, Mya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
I think it is very important to get support from family and friends. Those are usually your first customers, clients, etc. I feel completely comfortable asking friends and family for support because they are very loving, caring, and supportive already. If you are working on a craft or growing a dream of yours whether it’s photography, makeup, hair, etc I think its very important to have a great support system and being able to practice your craft with friends and family first. They can give you good advice and different outlooks and perspectives. It is helpful to be able to see other ideas and thoughts from other people point-of-views. When I first started doing makeup I used to practice on my friends and myself and as months went by my family members began to ask me to do their makeup.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Mya Dozier. I am a makeup artist based in Cleveland, Ohio and a traveling makeup artist as well. Back in 2018, is where my makeup journey began. I started off by doing my own makeup and then practicing on my friends. Makeup was something that I always enjoyed. You can get so creative with different makeup looks. Makeup was not a career I thought I would get into at first. I mainly enjoyed just being able to make myself look good and others. One day it was brought to my attention by one of my friends that I should start doing makeup on others because I did a really great job on hers. At first I was very hesitant and unsure. One day I decided to advertise and I ended up getting my first client. She was going to a birthday party I was so nervous but she reassured me that she loved my service. From there I started to grow more confident and now in 2023 I am continuing to grow more and more each day. I have now done weddings, photoshoots, fashion shows and more. What makes me different from others is my personality and my skillset. The most thing I get complimented on is how I make their skin look. A lot of my clients love their makeup to lay natural on their face and I do just that! I love how I can make my clients feel comfortable and relaxed when they are in my studio. Everyday is not always going to be an easy day but it’s how you decide to make it. I am proud that I have grown so far and still is. Recently I just a did a fashion show that opened a lot of opportunities for me. It makes me proud that others are noticing my talent. For all future clients I want you to know that once you sit in my chair you will always want to come back. I love to make everyone feel confident and more beautiful.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
In order to build an audience on social media you have to remain consistent. Even if you may have a busy schedule already, you will need to make time to post your content. In todays time, social media is a major tool for your brand! Posting about your brand is very important in order to help you grow. You can have access to a worldwide audience. Remain consistent and give people good quality content. When I first started my makeup page on instagram I learned that I had to post but also give good captions and post daily, along with good quality content! The more you post the more your content will pop up in other peoples timeline. Use all the social media platforms facebook, instagram, Pinterest, etc.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe my good customer service has been able to keep me running and allowing me to continue growing. When I meet others I am respectful (you never know who you may be talking to). In the beauty industry, it is very important that you network with others and you must be appealing. People will be drawn more by how you conduct yourself and how you treat others.
