We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Justis Olivarez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Justis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Happiness is such a funny feeling to me. I feel like there are parameters of being happy, defined as this pinnacle of joy and bliss which creates overwhelming emotion through meaningful positivity. Sorry, I am just sent reeling when I am asked about my current position and state of mind, as I have never worked a “regular” job. Being in the food and beverage industry since 2009, I have known no other way of life other than late nights and early mornings. However, this could be defined as the new normal. There are so many creatives here in Chicago that hustle through this industry to make ends meet, and I would say that the collective is not worried about just one emotion. All this to say, I am happy and constantly working towards a meditative practice in my everyday life that supplements all my emotions.

Justis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Justis James Olivarez, and my artist moniker is Chef Juice. I am a former chef de partie with notable experience with The Alinea Group and Lettuce Entertain You. Currently, I am a function director with Boka Catering. Basically, I run events in the front of the house for corporate events, weddings and in-homes.
When I am not in food and beverage, I am cooking up audio productions and various other projects.
I have been performing and producing music since 2009, whilst creating digital media and physical artwork while handling logistics, creative marketing and design.
Because of recent collaborations, and my ability to adapt, respond and create solutions for independent artists; I am transitioning into the marketing industry.
My portfolio continues to grow through photography, production and consultations for future projects. I am so proud of my ability to consolidate my knowledge and experience.
Figuring out how to create value from everything that comes before me is what sets me apart from other. This is what honing my craft means to me now, and I love the idea of showcasing progression in a truly raw format.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The ability to constantly collaborate and influence our society through art, music and culture.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes, and here is a list of some influential resources:
-Nam June Paik: Moon is the Oldest TV
-No Logo by Naomi Klein
-Fire Walk With Me by David Lynch
-Strawberry Jam by Animal Collective
Yeah, I get it… these are all different media types. As a multimedia artist, I tried to give some of my absolute favorites. There is so much wonder insights available. When I am not watching TV, reading or listening; I am constantly exploring Chicago’s finest museums and galleries.
