We recently connected with Destiny Starks and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Destiny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When it comes to my Artistry, growing up I watched my mother! She was a makeup artist. She worked at Clinique station, so she’d bring home a lot of makeup. She let me play in some all the time. I would play in makeup everyday. Then I started learning to do individual lashes. They are called lash extensions now. The more I did it, the better I got! I have my own niche now. I specialize in Skin Makeup, I can do the dramatic and contour but a full coverage but skin affect is my strength. Now when it comes to hair, grown up my mom could do hair I just didn’t like how she didn’t mine lol so I’d stand hours in the bathroom, playing music and playing in my hair. Learning to braid, my little sister was my mannequin. Just the same with makeup, I practiced hair all the time and perfected styles. I am also I visual learner, so I can watch videos and learn the skill in 5 minutes tops!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I fell in love with hair and makeup at a young age. People started to notice my craft and I became a walking brand. I started off doing hair when I was 12, practicing on myself and little sister. Then I started getting clientele and followed hair, I found a passion for makeup at 17 years old. My parents believed in me and put in a professional makeup class. They gave opportunities to do events, photoshoots, weddings, birthdays, ect… My most monumental moment is when an agency reached out to me to come be apart of Oprah’s 2020 Weight Watchers Tour!! I flew to many cities and provided hair services and worked with brands such as Shea Moisture, Love Beauty and Planet, vaseline, and Dove! It was an amazing experience! I made some new friends and most important got to tour with OPRAH!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It is definitely the smiles on my clients faces and their satisfaction of my services!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was in a season of transitions in my life, i got pregnant and relocated. I had to stop my business for about 2 years. I am just now getting back to myself and getting back into my craft and hair and makeup. Also I learned, it is okay to take a break, sit down and enjoy life and the people in front of you.
