We were lucky to catch up with Shawnc Kpris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shawnc , appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Well thank you for having me. Going from idea to execution can be a struggle but I have accomplished so much when I kinda isolate myself with my ideas and plans. A little about me, I am a self taught makeup artist and I found joy in making women look beautiful, beauty influencing and content creation. Being on camera and showing my creativity and sense of humor helped me through a very difficult time I’m my life. I considered starting my own lash line but a friend at the time discouraged me and said there are so many other brands that I wouldn’t make it. So I believed her and put it off for another 4 years until the end of 2020 I woke up and said I’m starting this business but not just lashes a full cosmetics line. I filed for my LLC in January of 2021 but was still nervous about starting. I finally got my website and product line and logo completed in June of 2021. Moral of the story stop telling everyone your vision. Everyone is not meant to see your vision or walk with you down that path. Stop stressing about is it ready? What are people going to say? Who’s going to support? Just start the project or the business and learn and grow. Walk into every idea with a positive attitude that this is going to work out in my favor. Also do the research on whatever business or project you would like to start. Knowledge is definitely powerful.
Shawnc , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am originally from Chicago IL now residing in Saint Petersburg FL. I am am a Billboard Charts Recording Artist (K’Pris & Shawnc Kpris), songwriter, owner of beauty brand Shawnc Kpris Beauty established in 2021 (http://shawnckpris.com) , self taught makeup artist for over 15 years and mother of two boys Antajuan & Noah. I am extremely passionate about being creative and expressing myself through all forms of art. I recorded my 1st solo album entitled “Virgin Territory” in 2006. I was ecstatic to learn my single “Pick It Up” peaked at NO. 3 on Billboard Top selling R&B/HipHop sales chart in the June 24th, 2006 issue.”Pick It Up” was my first single in rotation nationwide on major radio. I have also released singles “A Lie & Dagger” independently in 2021 & 2022. Dropped my 1st music video for “Dagger” which was an exciting process. I’ve recently started my writing journey with “Divine Femininity Journal and Workbook” which is a Q&A, self reflection, affirmations, self love, healing and quotes workbook for your feminine journey that is available on Amazon https://amzn.to/443FdjQ . I have so much to say and give to this world. I am also doing 1 on 1 makeup classes, zoom calls for Social Media Strategy Coaching & to help business minded people start their business and gain resources to help the get started properly and maybe the extra boost of confidence to start their projects/ businesses. These opportunities can be booked http://Stan.store.com/shawnckpris
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients I’ve noticed has to be word of mouth. I did add a few beauty influencers to my roster and every few months (seasonal) I add a few more. They create content on their platforms for the brand and get people that respect and support their crafts to buy products. I have also tried paid ads on social media but haven’t seen much results. I’ve also participated in some festivals as a vendor which allows you the opportunity to connect with customers in person and that has been a great way to make new customers, relationships and sales.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I am currently selling solely on my website http://shawnckpris.com with Shopify but I recently wrote a workbook called “ Divine Femininity Workbook “ which is being sold on Amazon. Amazon has an amazing self publishing option for authors that makes it super easy to print and sell your work easy. I absolutely love shopify because it allows you so much control and so many apps to keep the business moving effectively and up to date. Both Amazon and Shopify offer little video classes if you’re not website, social media or business savvy to help you understand and execute your projects. I do have an Etsy sellers account but I haven’t had much luck on there and to be honest I haven’t put a lot of energy into that platform so that probably why.
