We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chelsea Porter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chelsea , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission is to help people define their definition of beauty. Everybody is different and beautiful in their way. I just want to help enhance their natural beauty. Being comfortable in your own skin is an amazing feeling that everyone should experience.
Chelsea , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I used to use makeup as an escape from reality. Makeup was my happy place. I learned to do it on myself and then became a brand ambassador for one of my friends and then became a Mary Kay consultant. I did well so I decided to explore the beauty path more. I started asking friends and family to let me do their makeup. I quickly learned everything doesn’t work for everybody and that makeup was more than just placement. Just when I thought I had gotten the hang of it the pandemic hit. During the pandemic I pushed my products, but I wanted to do more with my business. In January 2021 I started school to become an esthetician and by July 2022 I was not only a licensed esthetician and professional makeup artist, I was also a licensed instructor. From 2019 when I launched a product based business to now where I offer a unique range of products and services this journey has been rewarding. I’ve learned alot not only from my schooling, but from my mentors and my clients as well.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is honestly my clients reaction to the service they just received or the product that they bought. For someone to say “Oh I never knew a facial could feel so good” or “This is the best lipgloss” it’s just confirmation that I’m doing something right and I’m on the right path.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding my businesses are an ongoing thing. I am self funded. I work a regular full time job to help fund my business. I do have some amazing friends and family who have sown seeds into me and my businesses and have helped me along the way. It has definitely been a journey, but a learning experience none the less.
