We recently connected with Chrystal Norwood and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chrystal, thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
It takes consistency to be successful. In every aspect of your life, it takes discipline to want to stay on the path especially during hardships. When hardships arrive such as deaths of those close to us, health problems that may arrive unexpectedly, etcetera; we have to be willing to keep going whether that looks likes writing down ideas, networking with others within the industry or other industries. It’s easy to sway off but the strength to get back on track is the hardest thing but so worth it. As a woman that has Sickle Cell Anemia, I know first hand when it comes to having the ability to endure with the uncomfortable feelings and things that happen in life unexpectedly and wanting to be the best.

Chrystal, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into my industry within my senior year of high school. I stopped for a bit and picked it up while in college. I have then been building, learning, creating opportunities for myself and others along the way, networking and expanding my career out of the norm. I provide modeling service such as fashion shows, photoshoots, brand ambassador for clothing designers and boutiques. I provide model coaching, classes for models that include runway and learning the fashion industry. I also provide life coach sessions, tutoring and mentoring the youth as well as babysitting services and resume building. My ability to be flexible and continue to push through when I am sick (pain crisis from Sickle Cell) sets myself apart. I have noticed that I am understanding of those that are around me. Having a high vibrant aura and personality is unique that those around feel the positive impact. I am most proud of being able to build my resume without being signed to anyone thus far, which is remarkable and made me want to start my own business and be an inspiration to others. Regardless of what personal things we have to endure, we can still make our dreams come true. Even when I am sick or have a pain crisis, I am doing something pertaining to my career and industry from creating ideas, networking with others, helping someone within the industry in general.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One thing those not within the fashion industry don’t understand is that models have to endure a lot such as practice walking, posing, eating certain foods and we do it to build our confidence. We are undermined by those within the industry such as photographers. Not everyone is a good model and not everyone is a good photographer. You have imposters from both sides. Photographers would want models to shoot and collaborate with for their portfolio but they are not willing to provide photos and/nor payment. Being a model is just the same. We work and deserved to be paid and should not feel obligated to do things because the photographer is really a weird and creepy person that has entered this industry to see women’s bodies for free and vice versa for those wanting to be models. Please be careful of scammers, and do your research.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Humbleness. I have been told that I am too humble which I take as a compliment. I am a rare individual because I see things from various perspectives. I have an open-mind. Being relatable while being honest is easy for me because although I haven’t had a certain experience doesn’t mean I haven’t learned from someone’s else mistake to provide advice that may be beneficial to someone or myself.
