We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Hoverson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, thanks for joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
My boss, Jonathan, has been integral in my growth as a business owner, friend, and person. I worked under him the entire time I was creating this brand and he has not only been supportive but also gives me constructive criticism, which is something I do not get from many other people. He has enabled me to build confidence in myself and always offers a very logical point of view. He has seen my capabilities, talents, and potential. In seeing me in a way I hadn’t fully seen myself, he led me to feel more inclined to take bigger risks. I am grateful for his mentorship and how it has contributed to my business.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Taylor. I am a Los Angeles native and a self-proclaimed modern hippie. I started Tangerine Tuesday because I saw a lack of apparel that displayed my beliefs, and the beliefs of the like-minded individuals I surround myself with. I wanted clothes that were modern and trendy, but that held values that were ancient and intuitive. With this, I create apparel and digital products all based on personal growth. I feel that what this offers to my audience is a chance to feel seen; for the people that have one foot in the modern world and one foot seeking to land somewhere else. With Tangerine Tuesday I am creating a brand that is unique and unlike what I have seen before. It is very personal to my source of creation and needs, but as Carl Rogers says, “What is most personal is most universal.” At my core, I am a writer and collector of words and TT is an expression of that and one that allows my audience and customers to display their values and dive deeper into what can help them step more into their greatest expression of self. In line with the true nature of all of us, Tangerine Tuesday is constantly shifting and evolving, and changing. Most businesses stray away from that out of fear of seeming ungrounded, but as you grow, I grow with you and I try my best to meet my audience where they are at while simultaneously giving them a little nudge to go one step further.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
How much time do you have? Because I could write an entire book on this. I will start by saying starting a business has been the most spiritual experience I’ve yet to have. I have never been forced to look so deeply at my shadows and limiting beliefs. Because I was drastically leveling up as I began the project that is Tangerine Tuesday, I needed to let go of everything that was holding me down previously (boy, was that a lot.) The most prominent lesson I have had to unlearn throughout this process is that done is better than perfect. I realized that perfectionism is just fear in disguise, enabling me to hide behind the idea that, “it needs to be better before it’s done.” But that’s not the case, the act of creating and finishing something is the whole. entire. point. I would spend weeks choosing one design for one graphic for one logo or Instagram post. Now, I give myself a deadline and I tell myself to stick with whatever I finished in that time frame. Do I always actually do this? Absolutely not (the hardest part of being your own boss is that there is no one to hold you accountable.) But slowly, we’re learning.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Truly, most of my customers come from Instagram. My generation (millennials) and newer ones go straight to Instagram to seek the credibility of a business. In understanding this dynamic I try to optimize my Instagram to be a good balance of professionalism and personality.
