Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Erik Mark Sandberg. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Erik Mark thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
The artworks made in the studio are the culmination of exploration, experimentation, and a conscientious engagement with the current discourse surrounding painting. Paramount among the requisites for success is a commitment to the craft. Nonetheless, as a painter, I encounter various obstacles that hinder the progress and development of the work, including the constraints of limited time, the pervasive distractions of modern life, and the specific limitations imposed by the materials employed.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Erik Mark Sandberg, a Los Angeles based visual artist and academic. Through the implementation of interdisciplinary techniques, the paintings delve into the multifaceted intricacies inherent in contemporary culture. Anchored in the ordinary aspects of daily life, the creative works find inspiration in the quotidian, utilizing various artistic mediums, including painting, printmaking, and digital processes. Employing a considered fusion of these mediums, the artworks manifest intricate representations of figures and allegorical narratives. These crafted creations establish a painterly realm that transcends the boundaries demarcating the natural world from the synthetic realm of the digital sphere. In doing so, they offer a nuanced exploration of the human condition. By acting as catalysts for contemplation, the paintings ask viewers to engage with the intricacies of our existence within a spatial domain imbued with psychological dimensions.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
To promote support for the arts in society, it is essential to instill a cultural appreciation for visual arts at a young age and stress the significance of art criticism.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To genuinely address the contemporary zeitgeist and expand the discourse surrounding contemporary painting.
