We were lucky to catch up with Kalessia Bailey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kalessia, thanks for joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
For starters, I’m Kalessia Bailey better know for my brand name “BaileyBeat”. I’ve been doing makeup for over 6 years now. The love I have for makeup started as a little girl. Makeup has been my favorite thing in my life since I was 16 years old. In high school/college I would spend the majority of my time watching youtube tutorials, practicing new looks on my face, and doing makeup on anyone that would let me. I remember sneaking to wear eyeliner and lipstick and my mom would make me wipe it off and say I was too young. Makeup was art for me and creating art was my therapy. Since then I knew I wanted to be a makeup artist and I had no idea how it was going to happen but I knew it was meant for me. Fast forward to now, almost 10 years later, l’m doing what I love everyday and making a living from it. I get to make women feel their most beautiful and express my creativity through my art. My dream life is actually becoming attainable and I couldn’t be more excited, grateful and proud. To know me is to love me. I’ve put my all into my brand and I wouldn’t change it for anything.
Kalessia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I specialize in natural and soft makeup looks. My goal as an artist is to enhance my clients natural beauty. Not only do I want my clients to look good but I want them to feel good as well. Instead of keeping up with the latest trends I create artistry that fits my client desires. I love timeless makeup looks. I want my clients to look back 5 years from now and say “wow I still love this makeup”.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
As a small business owner, it’s hard to understand how one person can do it all. I’m here to tell you it’s possible. As a business owner I provide the service, ,create content, respond to calls/texts, purchase supplies, host classes, I do it all. In the beginning, funding my business was difficult. It was hard to fund a business with a small clientele but as my business started to grow, I created charts and spreadsheets to divide my expenses and proceeds for a better understanding of how to operate my business. I’m now fortunate enough to fund my business and live a comfortable lifestyle.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation is built on my knowledge, skill set and customer experience. I love to engage with my clients, ask about their day or whats the special occasion for getting their makeup done. We chat , listen to music and talk about life goals. Having a great clientele and referrals has changed my business and reputation. I strive for greatest and put my clients first. I’m so excited to see how far “BAILEYBEAT LLC” can grow.
