Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to D’Kiah King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
D’Kiah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The time I had to take a risk that was pretty big was when I decided to be a solo esthetician. I went to tour a suite thinking I was going to get it in the future but instead I was back a week later signing a lease. At that time I had no job, no savings, and no clients. All I had at that moment was faith that I could make it happen. The day I signed I need a security deposit and the 1st weeks rent and I had to ask my sister could she help me. I had just got a bed and some facial supplies for Christmas so that what I moved in with. I was so nervous trying to figure out how I was going to pay my rent each week but it got paid and I made some clients that are still with me til this day. I continue to think that if I didn’t take that huge risk I would still be searching for the perfect spa or salon to work in when I was the perfect spa for me. Since that first salon suite I’ve moved twice and each move has been bigger than the previous one. I can only be grateful for each business owner I encountered along the way because each one taught me something different and they all encouraged me to keep going even in tough times. Also my clients have really helped me keep going as well each one has given me different advice and each one brings a different piece of happiness and joy into my salon. I’m grateful for the risk, the other business owners, my clients and most importantly God because with out all three combined i don’t know where I would be today.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Dkiah King and I’m a 24 year old MUA/esthetician. I got into the industry because I was trying to be official with doing makeup so I thought a license would bring in my preferred clientele. I’ve been doing makeup for about 5 years now and skincare/waxing for a year and a half. I love the beauty industry because I love to see the smile and glow on people after finishing makeup or a facial makes me feel so good. I provide natural and soft glam makeup services. Along with intimate waxing services and corrective skincare services. The problems I solve for my clients is hyperpigmentation and acne. I also help with getting men on skincare routines that help with ingrowns in the beard region and moisturizing dry skin. What I’m most proud of is how far each one of my clients have come on their skincare journey. From shaving to coming to get waxed on a consistent schedule and from going from no skincare routine to using their skincare day and night. My clients transformations are biggest my accomplishments. I want potential clients to know that I’ve been where they are and I love what I do because I had to be my first client I’ve suffered with acne since middle school and didn’t see changes until last year when I took my skincare serious. My brand stands for seeing ourselves in the mirror as aesthetically pleasing. Waking up and thinking I look aesthetically pleasing without the makeup and with the fresh pimple lol. Aesthetically Pleasing Beauty is for breaking the view that society has on how we look at ourselves.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes, my side hustle definitely became my full time business. I use to do makeup in high school just cause I knew how and people would ask. Then I got to college and started charging to do makeup for events and special occasions. I honestly never thought makeup would be something I continued doing but it just followed me everytime I would stop someone always ended asking me to do their make up for something they had to do and I just couldn’t say no. The. It got to where it is today cause I started believing that this is what I was meant to do so I took the leap to go to esthetician school and it’s been so amazing since then. Some key milestones were finishing school cause honestly the hours were hard for me. I even took a break from school for two months before finishing. Then getting licensed and opening up my salon was the next key milestones. It was so fulfilling seeing the growth of where I started to where I am.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn is the thought of perfection. Everyone started someone and that somewhere probably wasn’t pretty. At first no matter how many times I was told nothing has to be perfect just post it. I never thought to do it because it didn’t look pleasing to me. The idea of perfection is what held me back from reaching more people because I just felt like I wasn’t good enough to post about. We always have this idea of how something is supposed to look and if it doesn’t look like how we imagine it we eliminate the idea completely. I remember at my old apartment on my front door before leaving I had a post it note that’s said “post it anyway”. No matter if it gets zero likes post it somebody’s watching. I still struggle with this to this day but I’ve come so far cause I actually try to post no matter what little detail isn’t perfect. Learning that what looks so perfect on someone else’s page may not look so perfect on yours. I think losing the idea of perfection has taken my business so much further.
