We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryn Pitts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryn, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Back in March of 2022, I was working for a remote tech company based out of the East Coast as a Business Development Representative. During this time, Serendipity Social Co was still very much in its infancy, so while doing my BDR job I was simultaneously working on building the business, networking within the new market I had just moved to (San Antonio), and trying to establish a client base.
From March to June, I was trying to navigate my double workload which meant working as a BDR during the day, filling any breaks in my day with SSCo, and staying up late into the night working on SSCo. Despite never getting a lunch break and entirely ruining my sleep schedule, this dynamic did work for me for a while! Nonetheless, with the start of Summer, I found myself struggling to manage my 9a-5p workload which was becoming more demanding on top of my 5p-9p workload that was steadily on the incline.
By the time August had rolled around, I was putting a majority of my efforts into SSCo and as a result, underperforming at my 9-5. At this point, I knew it was time to seriously reflect on the way I was operating, and my bosses had a similar feeling… With my decline in performance, my bosses started monitoring my day-to-day more and adding to my workload. I felt stuck within my business because of my inability to dedicate my days to it and my tight schedule that didn’t allow much wiggle room to sneak in Content Days. I knew I needed more time during the day to work with companies, build my business, and attend networking events that would get me in front of the right people.
I planned to discontinue my BDR position within the next two or three months, find a less demanding part-time gig to keep some reliable income in my pockets, and work on SSCo part-time instead of when I have the time. I knew I wanted to move smart with the transition, and I was adamant in my disinterest in jumping into Entrepreneurship without a life float. As we moved towards the middle of August, my bosses discussed with me their plans to remove me from the BDR team, effective immediately… So, as you could imagine, and knowing my original escape plan, I was freaking out! I knew that I was willing to put all of my energy into my business, but what I didn’t know at that time was if I was ready to make the jump, if my current income could even sustain my current living situation, and if I was going to be able to build a clientele to replace my missing income.
After what felt like a four-hour meeting, I instantly hopped onto LinkedIn and Indeed and began submitting my resume for other remote gigs that were part-time and paid decent enough. I spent the next week in an absolute frenzy calling every business within 30 minutes of my house and reaching out to all of my business owner contacts who had openings I thought my skill set would be able to fill. After two weeks of crickets, I was offered a job opportunity as a Receptionist. This gig was close to my house, had a flexible schedule, paid well, and I knew the majority of my potential co-workers already! I was going to take it, but then I didn’t.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “why not?” Well, during those two weeks of silence, I had a lot of time to reflect on myself, my business, and my future career goals which brought me to a great epiphany; If I don’t believe in myself, then no one will and If I don’t give my business a chance, no one will. So, into the waters of Entrepreneurship I jumped… With no life float.
I started by zeroing in on my business plan and establishing the official Serendipity Social Co brand that you see today. From there, I used my BDR skills to prospect new clients and target them through Email Marketing while running numerous ads on Instagram and Facebook to help me land in front of the correct audience. After hundreds of emails, thousands of follow requests, and what felt like millions of Instagram likes and comments, I landed three more clients to add to my roster. Luckily for me, those three additional clients were just what I needed to buy myself a bit more time and a lot more social media advertisements.
As September came and went, and we moved further through the remainder of the year, I found myself very satisfied with the work my newly opened schedule was allowing me to produce. I had gotten myself on a decently structured daily routine, was getting the hang of my new job title, and was consistently networking with and marketing to potential new clients. I finally had the time that I needed to pour fully into my business, and as a result, my business began to blossom! Looking back, now coming up on the one-year anniversary of my plunge into Entrepreneurship, I wouldn’t change any sequence of events that occurred last August for the world. This past year as a Small Business owner has taught me lots of things, but this lesson remains very present; You are never going to be “fully ready” to do anything, especially take a risk, but sometimes in some cases, what you needed all along was a little push into your leap of faith.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

What I want people that work with SSCo to know is that we truly care. We care about their business, we care about its success, and we care about the person behind the business!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The quickest way I grew my audience on social media was by engaging with others who were in my direct Target Audience, for example, Women-Owned Businesses, Black Owned Businesses, Small Businesses, etc. By engaging with them I mean hyping them up in the comments, liking their photos, interacting with their stories, and in some cases sending thoughtful DMs.
I think people can underestimate the impact a genuine interaction can have. I take pride in knowing that I have built the SSCo social media presence on numerous platforms organically through networking, making connections, and supporting those around me. As I always say, “Support people and people will support you”.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
In all honestly, the best source of new clients for us has been word of mouth! I am truly grateful to have stumbled upon such a supportive community of business owners who understand when one succeeds, we all succeed. I have been very fortunate to have made connections valuable enough that they recommend my company to those they know could benefit from my services. To this day, one of my most cherished moments was landing one of my biggest clients, Chad Miller Auto Care, through a word-of-mouth recommendation from a man who I only had crossed paths with in person once. We shared a few thoughtful conversations at a community event and within one week, I had an email inquiring about Social Media Management services from CMAC.
