Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tyler Goliday. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tyler, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I have not made it to that point in my artistic career. That is my main mission currently to push my artistic ability as far as I can for the generations after me and also before me. The steps are just to keep practicing and continue producing art that is genuinely made from my soul. I also believe I just have to keep putting myself out there more to new eyes. There are always new opportunities to expand and gain new supporters. Money will come but to share my story with each piece is something I believe will continue to help me grow to become a household name and take care of my family.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an artist from Starkville, MS. Mainly my work is in the medium of acrylic paint. Painted in grisaille, the figures portrayed take up much of the composition in a way that asserts their presence and power. The portraits are often framed against vibrantly colored or patterned backgrounds to further place emphasis on the subject depicted. My large and enigmatic portraits and paintings draw inspiration from childhood and a range of life experiences. I can say I have been into art as a child I was always drawing shoes and cartoon characters. I can say that is something that has never left my interests and now I am pushing it to the point that it can be a career.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that being a perfectionist is just holding me back and feeding into my anxiety. I would be afraid to fail but failure is the best teacher in my craft or just life in general. Every time I create, I have to remember this is a lesson no matter the outcome and I should be happy I have this talent and create something out of nothing to become a great body of work.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to have my own solo art show under my belt. That would be like a checkmate move in my career not to say I would be satisfied but almost comparable to beating a big mission in a video game and leveling up to the next stage. I want to be able to produce several pieces of work that come together in a gallery and tell a story. I get several ideas for the rollout of it and everything. I think this could help people look at the art scene that is becoming bigger in Mississippi.
