Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nelson Farfan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nelson, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
We live in a world that is every time more connected, so to truly make a living from your creative input takes a lot of dedication and discipline. A lot of the times people outsource other artist in different parts of the world that can be more affordable but also that takes apart some opportunities for the artists in the scene.
In a world that is driven by technology it is hard to fit creative projects in between That are “profitable” or than they make sense in a business perspective.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Nelson Farfan and a lot of people just called me by my last name. I have been living in the Atlanta area since 2016. I moved over here from Venezuela looking for new and better opportunities but I would have never imagined that I was going to start a music career away from home. I was lucky enough to find friends along the way that shared the same passion for music and the willingness to give a message out there. It was because of that desire to create music that I started playing the bass guitar as a necessity to have more tools available at the moment to write a song. I not only fell in love with the instrument but also it has opened different doors for me as a musician and creative artist as well. The importance of the bass for me in music is part of who I am as an artist, it is not only the rhythmic interaction with other instruments but also the song’s melodic fundamentals.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is to have to opportunity to connect with people that don’t know you at all, making a connection with someone just because of your music is something that surprises me every time just like the first time it ever happened to me before. How a complete stranger can understand your song’s message and meaning is meaningful to me. Listening to others talk about your music and having every single one of the a personal approach to the songs is a priceless moment for an artist that can easily identify with.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
There are different ways to support your local artist these days. I always encourage people to give it a try to listen to new upcoming musical proposals and emerging artists that usually only have a little chance to appear in the music scene on the mainstream platforms compared with the well-known artists/bands we all have heard about. There are some apps and webpage to privately and directly contribute with donations to your personal favorites bands/artists where they keep most of that money provided. Another great way to support your local band would be by assisting local venues and events, it is the best opportunity for someone to not only have a good time listening to live music but also gives you the opportunity to be able to purchase some of the artists’ merchandise they usually have at those events. At the end of the day adding up those different mentioned ways to contribute with the local artists can make a big difference in their careers’ success by creating not only an economic impact in their pockets but also by motivating all of the involved parties.
