We recently connected with Erika Krauze and have shared our conversation below.
Erika, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
As far as social media, I do maintain my own. I like to do it myself because it allows me to have that personal touch to my page, oppose to someone else doing it. (Whether it goes into captions, responding to comments or messages, also I’m more aware of clients lives, what was said, and it just helps build relationships too.) I know social media is a chore or work in itself, since you have to take time to post, interact, and be social on it. (You know, engage with others.) but I would definitely say keep up with it. You have free advertisement, you can show off your work, get recognition from companies, build relationships. You just have to stay consistent with it. Always keep your end goal in mind. Just don’t get too caught up in social media. Set a time limit for how long you’re on it for. And always remember balance. Real life is outside of our devices, enjoy where you are at when you’re there. (But it never hurts to share here and there too.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey! I’m Erika Krauze! I’m A hair stylist/ hair artist. (Whatever you want to call it.) I’ve been doing hair for over 17 years, which is just crazy, because I don’t know where the time has gone. I started doing hair right out of highschool.
I work behind the chair full time, and educate with Pulpriot, which is a color company I absolutely love.
For me, hair is just fun. Being able create a look for others that’s fitting to them and their lifestyles, helping them feel confident about themselves. It’s just a great feeling.
I’m very proud of all the success I’ve made so far in this industry, being successful doing hair behind the chair, just working on the educational side of things with Pulpriot, teaching classes and shows, and being nominated for one of the top hair shows. Becoming an ambassador for a campaign called The texture of change. I’m truly blessed.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I personally believe don’t in limiting yourself, or put a cap on what you can or cannot do. You could miss out on a huge thing in your life if you do. So clearly I do hair, earlier in my career I didn’t do vivid color, why? Because I didn’t understand green hair, as a kid you’re always told to wash your hair after swimming, so your hair didn’t turn green.) I could have shot down the whole idea together.
After moving to South Carolina, while building a clientele, someone posted in a Facebook group, asking for a stylist who could do their hair with vibrant colors. Of course I said yes, and that’s where my whole clientele took off.
Imagine if I said no, just imagine if I stayed shut off to an idea because i didn’t understand why anyone would want green hair. I wouldn’t be an educator for PulpRiot right now, I wouldn’t be watching my dreams that I always wanted unfold. I wouldn’t truly be enjoying what I do and getting that artistic side, creativity and freedom.
So truly. Don’t limit yourself
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Always word of mouth. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate those that love me, let me do their hair, and go out and tell others about who does their hair whenever they get a compliment. It’s truly the biggest thanks I can get.
Social media is fantastic too. Just because you can build your portfolio online for people to see, your contact info is there. And everyone utilizes the internet.
