We were lucky to catch up with Maliyah Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maliyah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I always had a passion for creating my own things and selling them. I remember when I was little I would draw things and sell them to my classmates for like a dollar or five so when I got older, I realized I could actually create my own business while doing things I love like making jewelry, so I went for it and I did it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who don’t know me or know of me, I am a young black female entrepreneur and business owner. I started my business on accessories and jewelry mainly because that is what I had a passion to do ever since I was younger. I always had something inside of me that just wanted to start a business so when I got older I just went for it. Over the years I’ve seen multiple people starting businesses and that made me decide to start mine. A few products that I make are waist beads, bangles, bracelets, earrings, necklaces for men and women customized, and made to order. When dealing with a Small business, you have to have excellent customer service because the main goal is to satisfy the customers because if they’re satisfy they recommend you and that’ll build your sales and customers. I am most proud of myself for following what I’ve always wanted to do and starting my business. You might see multiple people selling the same thing as me, but I’m a little different, I make all my products handmade customized to your fitting and your liking. What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
A few things to help me build my reputation for my small business were social medias. Social medias like Instagram, Facebook TikTok, especially TikTok, that is a very popular platform that multiple people are on so posting my work got me a lot of attention on there. I also went out and made posters. so let’s just say 100 copies of a flyer or poster, go around the neighborhood and put it up so when people walk by they’ll see it. Another thing that I used was business cards. I would give them out to people when walking past promoting my business.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Keeping in touch with my customers is one of the most important things, especially with my small business. If my customer contacts me about a custom order or contacts me about information on an item getting back to them is important. Satisfied customers are the ones who will bring loyalty.If your customer is satisfied with the products they’ll continue to come back and they’ll recommended products to other people and that’ll bring you more customers.
