We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krista Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krista below.
Krista, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Personally, I have always been passionate about natural beauty products and the overall health of my community. When I was in the beginning phases of starting Truth Skincare, I was doing quite a bit of research and quickly realized that there were very few organic skincare products of good quality that were both accessible & affordable.
A lot of skincare companies fill their products with harmful ingredients or the products are too expensive for the average consumer to afford. I wanted to change that. I saw there was a need for products like mine in the marketplace, and I just went for it.
So in 2020, when we were all in stuck in the house due to Covid-19 and dealing with the harsh reality of police brutality, I decided to take all of those raw emotions and channel them into something positive.
That’s when I launched on Juneteeth 2020!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I want people to know that I still til this day consider myself to be your average every day single mom. I am a business woman in the day, and still come home to my kid, cook dinner and clean up like everyone else. My products are made for men and women like myself. Who want to use clean safe products, and can’t always afford the $100 serums and cleansers.
I am a proud LA native. I earned my Business Marketing degree from Clark Atlanta University and have been working in the Music & Fashion industries for over 15 years. Now that Truth Skincare is about to be 3 years old, I can say that I am proud to still be around and growing. I am gearing up to have my products featured again for a 2nd season of the hit show Let’s Make a Deal with Wayne Brady. I can also be found in select retail stores in LA’s Westfield shopping centers. I’d say I am thankful to have a few things to be proud of right now.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
Yes, I make all of my products! That’s how I am able to ensure they are quality products. In the beginning, I only knew how to make my Glow Up Body Butter and my Baby Bump Butter. Over time, I had to do a lot of research and “test” different variations of my products on my family and friends. I learned about what other cultures used on their skin and the key ingredients within them that keep ones skin clear, remove dark spots, hydrate, and reduce aging.
I knew I finally got it right when my family and friends were asking me for more. That was when I knew I had a great product. I only use my own products and have been doing so for the past 4 years, so I know for a fact they truly work!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I realized that people will not buy something from you unless they like you or feel some sort of common connection. When I do vending, I understand that I have to use my sales skills and educate potential customers on the brand and why it’s such a great product. I have to show my personality and knowledge of my products and why clean ingredients work. When online or on social, it’s a lot harder because I have to find ways to connect to potential customers through the screen. So that could be through tutorials, funny memes, etc.
Ultimately, I think I continue to build my reputation by producing a great product, fulfilling orders quickly, and providing white glove customer service. I send every order out with a personalized hand written thank you card, so that each customer knows that their order was made with love.
