Hi J’sun, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?

Déja Grüv Band was selected to represent the United States at the U.S. Embassy in Haiti. It was a truly monumental opportunity for our band. It marked one of our proudest accomplishments and left us with the fondest memories, particularly because we had the chance to perform for a youthful audience ranging from early teens to mid-20s in some of the most undeserved communities in Haiti. Thanks to the incredible support of the U.S. Department of State, we were able to collaborate and share the stage with local traditional musicians across various regions in Haiti.

Throughout our journey, the band embarked on a series of unforgettable experiences, including in-person mini concerts, collaborative performances, lecture demonstrations, workshops, and jam sessions. We traveled the suburbs, touring numerous music schools and immersing ourselves in the vibrant local music scene, and culture. We had the privilege of playing alongside talented local musicians, fostering a sense of connection and cultural exchange.

We enjoyed the opportunity to share our knowledge and skills while also embracing the chance to absorb the rich musical traditions of Haiti. Each interaction was a mutual celebration of artistry, bridging gaps and nurturing creativity.

The food in Haiti was absolutely incredible! We enjoyed the delicious flavors of locally sourced fruits and vegetables and the mouthwatering taste of freshly caught fish. We enjoyed “Griyot”, “Pikliz”, traditional “rice and beans”, and other yummy dishes. Every bite was a mouthwatering experience that left us wanting more.

The pinnacle of our tour was the unforgettable 4th of July gala held on the splendid grounds of the U.S. Embassy. It was a night filled with newfound friends, energetic performances, and a collective sense of unity. The gala served as a testament to the power of music to bring people together, transcending boundaries and fostering lasting connections.

Our time in Haiti was a transformative journey, leaving an indelible mark on our band and deepening our appreciation for the universal language of music. The memories we made and the bonds we forged during this remarkable experience will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

HOW I GOT INTO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. It all began when I started joining my grandmother to clean our local church. During those moments, I was irresistibly drawn to the piano. With no formal training, I taught myself how to play, and my grandmother recognized my passion, allowing me to practice while she worked. That sparked a fire within me.

Now, I am a gifted multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, independent artist, vocal coach, and music producer. Not only have I achieved personal success, but I also share my knowledge as a vocal coach, empowering aspiring artists to find their unique voices. As a music producer, I help others transform their raw talent into captivating tunes.

My journey is an inspiration, emphasizing the power of passion, hard work, and self-belief. The love I have for music has not only brought me personal fulfillment but has also left a lasting impact on those who experience my artistry. Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

Looking back on my creative journey, one valuable resource I wish I had known about earlier is the power of people and the importance of asking for help. In the beginning, I believed that I had to tackle every aspect of my creative pursuits on my own, mainly due to financial constraints. However, as I progressed, I realized the significance of reaching out to others and being honest about my journey’s current stage.
