We were lucky to catch up with Omar & Lisa Bush recently and have shared our conversation below.
Omar & Lisa , appreciate you joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
Everything we have done or attempted to accomplish has had some difficulty. Even before we met, the road was rough. People have doubted our abilities in our personal careers, there have been business failures, & even problems in our marriage that we’ve had to fight through. The number one thing that we have learned is that persistence, prayer and a strong faith has to be a part of the plan. Without it, nothing will work out.
Omar & Lisa , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Omar is a Painter by trade, and I have been working as a Licensed Practical Nurse for almost 16 years. Omar has dabbled in different fields of work including being a youth basketball coach and welding before discovering his love of painting.
Nursing has always been my passion, but I was in need of a new way to express myself.
Before & during the pandemic is when the decision was made to start our podcast, “What’s Shakin’ with the Bushes”.
Our conversations and opinions were so raw that we felt it was necessary to share them. We wanted people to understand how real and complex life is and no matter how difficult it gets, &that anything is possible. Being so open with our feelings & struggles was the main goal. We know how daunting it can be to be honest with the world we live in. Therefore, we have named ourselves the trailblazers of transparency.
After a couple of business failures, and lost jobs, we decided that no matter what obstacles came our way, we would continue to push forward. We are still building and boot- straping our interior painting business, “Bush with a Brush”, which is my husband’s passion. It is truly an art and he loves proving that beauty can be found in everything.
As for me, my mission is to show the importance of giving back, and helping those who can’t help themselves. I currently work with special needs children, and plan to increase my reach by helping others in various ways, leaving an impact. My main goal is to inspire other nurses and caregivers to be their best at all times, and that you aren’t required to burn yourself out. You cannot pour from an empty cup!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
We had to learn the power of communication, and unlearning the lie that feelings don’t matter. Growing up while black, meant that we had to put on an armor of strength, and that emotions had no value. Showing emotions was considered weakness.
Holding on to past traumas &, not releasing the hurt or acknowledging the pain, wreaks havoc on the mind and body. We had to learn that it’s ok to express how we feel, our fears, and share our experiences with each other to help one another heal. It’s a true form of intimacy.
My husband has dealt with survivors guilt for years on end after losing a very close friend. I’m currently in the process of learning the importance of self love, reminding myself that people pleasing is not the way anymore.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For us, the most rewarding thing we get out of this is that there really aren’t any limits to our creativity. We are running our own show, and no one can sensor us or tell us what we can do or what we can’t. It has become a form of therapy for us, and we don’t have to answer to anyone but God himself.
