Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Leslie Ann Pilling. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Leslie Ann, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Imagine loud collaborative excitement along with a trippy spin on exhibitions and programming in a museum. We are different. Museums are traditionally stuffy or give a vibe of solitude and reflection. When we started Metropolitan Museum of Design Detroit was born in Detroit the goal was to attract people to have access to educational enrichment and experiential opportunites while boosting the design industry to diverse communities. We accomplished and morph to relevant topics daily. We spark the curiosity of individual within the age group of 21-35 years and the “normal” demographics of youth and our elders. We are believe there is zero “Boxes” to be in or out of.
Leslie Ann, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The business of Design was a choice which I literally begged my parents for but was told it is not a career. My determination was clear from the age of 7 years old. My frame of reference for fashion and interior design came from a neighbor who was the Mom of one of my best friends at the time. Being bound and determined to somehow inch by inch surround myself with design by rearranging my room over and over. The books I read or tore-up including the Sears Roebuck catalog was relentless. My cut and paste method was created with a fresh approach and an organic result. My fashion sense was about two years ahead of the magazines. Each ensemble which was laid out on my bed in the morning became a silent ritual of excitement to be able to express my inner turmoil.
Our Discipline
To be a big thinker with concepts that have longevity is one of the foundations of success. When follow-through is essential this is where miss-steps happen. The discipline and committment to excellence commands attention right from the start is the moment of a purposeful strategy which can set one far ahead of other organization endeavors.
Creative solutions for clients are followed with a purposeful interview and as a close bond of collaboration. Listening and an extraordinary ability to read a client and or an audience at MM-O-DD is second-nature.
We are set apart as the extensive resources and opportunities through relationships for years has allowed us to now build a solid foundation.
As a community leader who is resilient and open to any category or genres of design has deepen our reach by featuring many international talents who locally have never been discovered. Basically we open boxes one-by-one.
We work with an array of partners who are to be discovered and celebrated.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Plain and simple. NFT’s are a rip-off and disrespectful to creatives.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
By starting MM-O-DD alone was short-lived. It takes a team and correct collaborative talent to bring such a public platform to the level we have achieved even if we are young for a museum.
