Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jrashaad Henderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jrashaad, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
Love concurs all. I’ve always believed it is important to find out what it is you love in life. Everyone deserves to have experienced that at least once. I can only remember being encouraged to do what it is I love as a youth in grade school. However, it was enough to leave an impression on me that lasted a lifetime. My love and passion for what I do keeps it from ever feeling like work. Love keeps me driven and allows room for innovation. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Jrashaad, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Jrashaad (Dra-Sh-Od) Henderson. Some know me as Jay, most as SUGg. I was born in Wichita, Kansas. I moved to Mesquite Texas in 2007 and have been in the DFW area ever since. I am the owner of All Inclusive By: Jay Henderson, a barbershop. As well as Roguish Musicc, an independent record label.
All Inclusive By: Jay Henderson was created in 2015. The business name alone reflects what the shop is all about. It is an all inclusive experience. Each customer gets what they are paying for and then some. Roguish Musicc was founded in 2001 by my father, Jamhal “Ndo” Henderson. I use the same principles in this business model as well. The all inclusiveness brings out the creativity in the artist.
For the majority of my life I have been able to express myself through cutting hair and music. I can say I inherited both talents from my father. As I have grown in each industry, I’ve learned that no matter what always be true to yourself. In life people encourage us to be whatever it is we want to be. I strive to be the version of myself daily. It’s not a hard task, but it requires consistent work. I encourage others to be themselves. The best version of that.
I can’t say I always knew this was the path I was meant to take. For years I had dreams of becoming a Nero Surgeon. Or at least that’s what I told others. It always sounded good, but my passion was really with being creative. I can say I excel at creativity. It’s literally just me being myself. Going with my gut instinct. Being this way didn’t happen over night either. I went through many obstacles and learned many lessons. Where I am in life now is not my final destination, but rather just another stop.
I thank God daily for the opportunities he presents. I am blessed to say I haven’t given up on my dreams.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth. When I see a movie preview of a new film, no matter how good or great the preview, I’ve always been more enticed to see it when someone gives their own personal review. Especially someone whom you value their opinion. This is what I target in my businesses. If my client/customer is truly satisfied their review will usually reflect that. Although I am open for business to anyone in need of my services, I tend to attract like-minded individuals. Individuals that resemble/reflect my own personality. This helps with the client/customer relationship as well.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
If you love me you have to support me. Just because someone is close to you or loves you, doesn’t mean they have to support what you do. You can’t control people. God gave us free will for a reason. That shouldn’t discourage you. Sometimes people have to see it to believe it. Success can be lonely. However, your success is determined by you. Don’t allow what anyone thinks, says, feels, or does dictate you, your moral compass, or what you want out of life. When something is for you, no matter what the world has to say or feel, it is for you. I can’t say I recall the exact moment It all made sense, but I can say even with knowing such, it is a battle I still deal with. However, at the end of the day, you have to be yourself and be happy with who you are and what you do. What others think is only a plus or a minus.
