We were lucky to catch up with Chris DeVore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
I may be The Karate Cowboy, but I’m not really associated with Karate or Cowboys. I actually state that I contain less than 3% actual Cowboy.
I draw a lot of influence from western music and culture like Patsy Cline, Bob Wills and Willie Nelson, but I do not listen to or perform country music.
I sometimes wear a cowboy hat and play a telecaster style guitar but my musical style is a combination of world music, jazz and rock with a western flare mixed in.
As for the Karate, I took martial arts as a kid but these days I only break boards when I sit on them. The Karate in my name represents my appreciation for Asia— including my influences from Indian, Russian and Middle Eastern music.

Chris, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m The Karate Cowboy! I’m a ‘one man trio’ musical experience. I perform a wild and eclectic variety of styles and songs. It’s honestly hard to describe, you just gotta check me out at:

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think everyone has unique talents and skills that drive them to certain things. We all an aptitude for several things, but we all gravitate towards our passions.
I don’t think we are supposed to understand why other people do what they do. We should just support each other, be understanding and strive to be our best!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I’m in the process of a pivot actually. I am working on taking my show from smaller venues into theatres and showrooms.
