We were lucky to catch up with Claudette Lewis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Claudette, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was diagnosed with Folliculitis decalvans several years ago. I started losing my hair in patches and tried everything from otc to prescription meds. Nothing worked. I started researching natural remedies for scalp conditions and found oils and plants that controlled my flare ups and inflammation. In 2020 after being sent home due to the Covid pandemic, I decided to get back to research. I took a formulating class online and started playing around with products. My girlfriend, Veronica was my first client. We found that my oil regrew her damaged edges, started giving out samples, and here we are
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, I pretty much did that on the previous page. I do work full-time for a well-known health care company in Illinois. I’ve been with them for 20 years this coming July. I am a mother of 3 adults, grandmother of 2.
I am also the events planner for my church and I am involved in community events.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
I do manufacture my own products. I specialize in small batches for freshness and potency of ingredients. I source all my ingredients from reputable vendors ensuring that they are ethically sourced with no additives. I started by mixing and matching anything that would soothe my ever sore scalp, I did take a formulating course with a well known online cosmetic school. (not sure if I can use the name)
I’ve learned to be honest when presenting my product. The goal is to have repeat customers. I’ve told clients the product wasn’t for them. I’ve told clients hair health/growth starts from within. I do include health tips on what to eat to improve your hair/scalp health. Hydration is very important etc.
All my products are removed from the shelf after 90 days of they haven’t sold. This is to keep fresh products on hand always as butters and oils can become rancid.
Most of all I’ve learned to believe in myself and my products. It’s not for everyone and that’s ok.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth has been the best source. I do not have a large following on social media but my people know me and my products. The products are featured in a small soap shop locally, as well as my website @ celiashairpotion.com
