We recently connected with Iyosi Pydas and have shared our conversation below.
Iyosi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Summertime in 2006, I was about a year out of high school and unsure what I wanted to do for a living.
About a year prior my mother had asked what I wanted for Christmas. Now this is my favorite holiday just FYI. All I wanted for Christmas was this Roland MC 909 Groovebox that I came across in the Metro Center Guitar Center one day after school. One of my friends showed me some music he’d produced/recorded on his own. Since I’ve always been interested in music, he recommended I try out Guitar Center to look at gear, and that’s how I ended up there.
What brought me to realize I’d like to pursue it as a career was when my mother knocked on the door to my room and showed me an engineering school in a magazine that she’d come across. That school was The Los Angeles Recording School.
At the time I had no idea schools like that existed, and I was immediately looking for ways to pull this off, as I live in Arizona and the school is in Los Angeles. I figured, if I can be taught to know what I’m doing in a studio environment, then I can finally express my creativity in a more effective way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My music career didn’t actually start until later in life. By chance and through a mutual friend I met Greydon Square who took me on as a student. He was my mentor in music for a few years as I was seriously pursuing it as a career.
Fast forward some years after my 2nd album was released, I felt that I was burned out from music. I hit a wall and wanted to gain some more skills rather than pushing out consistent projects so I took a long break.
My other passion started to take over, which is cooking. Everyone that knows me knows how important food is to me. As a matter of fact, my first album was a beat tape about food called, “Toasty Pye Krust”.
Blending both my passions for music and food sets me apart from most artists because of the way they play off of each other. None are more important that the other and they feed off of one another.
Just like my music career started to take off, so did my food business. I currently am serving clients and have been for about 4 years. Seeing my success, I’ve decided to pursue a food business with a goal of incorporating my music later, as I still practice avidly.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, that goal is financial freedom. My value is provided in the nourishment of the meals that I cook and the motivation and knowledge from the music I produce. Living a life true to myself is a lifelong goal of mine that is slowly starting to come to fruition.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover has helped me to learn money management and put me in a better financial position. Living check-to-check, I felt like I had no other way to get “above water” until I discovered this book.
It teaches financial literacy so that in the end you can have financial peace. Not having to worry about high overhead expenses enables me to think more creatively and work more effectively, Also, I’m able to put more cash towards my passions instead.
