We were lucky to catch up with Obinna Nwaobi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Obinna, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
All started for me in 2015, I was dropping off my friend at his house, and I was listening to 101.5 lite fm and it was a commercial that was playing at the time. and it mentioned Michael Jackson impersonator will be performing at a casino. I have never met a Michael Jackson impersonator before. So that was an opportunity I wanted to meet one, and went to the radio station website and I found out the impersonators Facebook name. searched for him messaged him and he told me to come to the casino to watch him perform which I did. He had all the jackets and the dance moves. He inspired me that day to become a Michael Jackson impersonator. He gave me the tools and the steps I needed to get my journey started asking Michael Jackson impersonator.
Obinna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well been impersonating MJ for 7 years met another impersonator who got my whole MJ tribute started in 2015. Am available for booking for all types of events you call you book me I’ll be there. I have sound system because I know sometimes the client may not have one I also provide fug machine to use for thriller performance if they want that. There are many MJ impersonators out there I strive to dance different by adding my own dance moves into MJ dance routines and I dress different have nothing but the best MJ attire for picture time. Since am the only MJ impersonator that has been doing this for 7 years you’ll get nothing but the best high energy entertainment that will have you and your guests movin and groovin.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It definitely has to be the excitement and joy I see from guests when they see me dancing to Michael Jackson songs like Billie Jean. Especially when I do the moonwalk, that’s when they go crazy lol which a lot of them have never seen a Michael Jackson impersonator before that looks and dresses like him.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Have to say in anything that people do it takes money to make money. so I have spent a lot of money promoting myself sponsoring my videos and pictures on Instagram. I spend at least $50 a week sponsoring and promoting myself locally. Basically if you want to get your face out there in whatever it is that you’re doing. Exposure is very important, sometimes it’s not always about the money, the money will come but the exposure is very important.
