Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jana Schuessler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jana, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I think I intuitionally I knew it since I was a kid. I loved writing and creating stories in my head. I’ve always been a dreamer and started using my fathers camera in a young age. I kept trying to tell stories but instead of writing them I would capture them with the camera.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jana, I was born and raised in Germany and have been living in New York for 5 years now. I am a photographer, mostly fashion, jewelry and celebrities. I always loved taking photos and taking photos of my friends. When I was a teenager I wanted to become a fashion designer only thing was that I could not draw a single straight line or anything that would explain people what I want to make. My last art class in school was a photography class and my teacher told me I was really good at it I should think about a photographer career. (Meanwhile my chemical teacher said I could never become one – he didnt understand that the time we are living is its all digital)
So coming from a 250 people living village I listened to my art teacher and not the other one and went for it. Started photography school, moved around the states and Germany, getting into fashion photography, assisting fashion photographers and always remembered that no one can make a decision about what you are capable of or what not. Now I’m living in New York, I’m fulfilling my dream, working as a photographer being happily super busy. Every day feels like a great day going to work I love it.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I always had the vision to become a well known fashion photographer but like it is with everything in life, when have you ever reached all your goals or more like when are you happy enough? I keep setting myself some goals to grow but also try to enjoy the moments I have and being grateful for them (which doesnt mean I’m getting lazy- always keep working hard!!!!)
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Probably in the business I am in I first thought this is a big working together with each other. Well sometimes it is but it’s not. What I had to unlearn is to trust peoples word – which sounds so negative but maybe better said : don’t rely on anyone or expect others to do work for you. Get up and do it yourself
