We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jason Farmer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jason below.
Jason, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The core of BLP Film Studios is about empowering marginalized voices!
When our pre-teen son decided he wanted to become a filmaker, we were all at once excited and blissfully charting a new course!
Jason, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The story of how BLP Film Studios originated more than a decade ago is a commitment to support our son in his endeavors to become a Film Maker. The fact that he was about 10 years old and I changed careers as part of that commitment is our “Secret Sauce.”
I was enjoying a long, decorated career in the government sector with visions of retiring as a Judge. J-II (Jason Farmer, II) had other plans and after several years of trying to dissuade him from becoming a Creative, I soon found myself at the behest of my wife joining him in his passion and pursuits!
After reaching out friends in the industry we set about a course of:
Volunteering, attending seminars, film festivals and generally dissecting film and media projects in search of nuggets of wisdom and opportunity.
What quickly became apparent is an emerging, sustainable business opportunity to service a lost market sector. Empirical data, supported by studies from leading institutions revealed BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and Women were media market drivers and at the same time the most underserved consumer group, creating a $12.5B and growing market opportunity to date.
A parallel phenomenon also driving new market opportunities was the proliferation of the streaming platforms. Consumers embrace of on demand programming forever changed the industry.
The demand for content was and will be so great that the industry suddenly exploded outside of the traditional media centers of LA and NYC.
BLP Film Studios is the culmination of J-II’s passion, industry demand and market opportunity. The outgrowth is the development of a 100-Acre full service studio production campus, to service general market audiences with content created by BIPOC and Women Creatives.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The original concept for the studio was for a single source entity to lease all 12 stages and acquire co-branded naming rights. After almost 12 months with an anticipated strategic partner their stock plummeted and we had to refocus our business model.
The lesson learned was to have Plan A-B-C.
We’ve now repositioned.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
While the key driver is the sound stages and the supporting assets, our business model entails more than 25 other revenue drivers. As you develop your concept a critical component is the ability to identify ancillary revenue drivers.
