Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tierra Norwood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tierra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I used to believe that success meant having a husband and wife living in a grand house with multiple cars and a significant amount of wealth. However, when I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey as a black young single mom, I doubted my ability to be successful. I wondered how I could get people to take me seriously. I was constantly concerned about what others might think of me, and my definition of success was based on societal stereotypes.
After my second child, I made the decision to dedicate myself fully to my business. I started landing government contracts, expanding my client base, and gaining recognition in my community and state. I was even selected to serve as the Grow with Google Coach for North Carolina. Despite these accomplishments, I still didn’t consider myself successful because I was a young black single mom.
Then, one day, it hit me. The essence of success lies in my continuous growth. Despite the odds stacked against me, I persevered and kept my business running. I realized that success cannot be defined by marital status, nor can it be measured by a specific amount of money. True success comes from the resilience to overcome challenges.
Finally, I began to see the genuine success in my business, unburdened by the superficial markers of societal success.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Tierra Norwood, the Chief Innovator and President of Ajon’s Professional Solutions LLC. My journey as a dynamic professional has spanned various fields, including economic and business development, radio & TV broadcasting, promotions, and marketing. My passion lies in marketing and professional development services, and my experiences and achievements have shaped me into a highly skilled entrepreneur.
It all began with my studies at the Carolina School of Broadcasting, where I earned a certification in Radio and TV Broadcast Communications. Building upon that foundation, I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Psychology from North Carolina Wesleyan College, which provided me with a solid understanding of the media industry and marketing principles.
After college, I embarked on a successful career in broadcasting and marketing. I started as an intern on the National Syndicated Bob and Sheri Morning Show, where I gained valuable industry experience. From there, I worked as a Promotions Assistant and Board Operator for WLNK 107.9 FM, and I held various positions, including copywriter, for different radio stations.
Driven by my vibrant personality and a desire for creativity, I explored new avenues and ventured into the world of comedy. I performed stand-up gigs and founded an improv comedy troupe called Trippy Troupe. These experiences, along with my multifaceted talents and willingness to take risks, propelled my career forward.
Eventually, I returned to my hometown of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where I made significant contributions to the community. Serving as the Downtown Development Coordinator for the City of Rocky Mount, I successfully implemented the city’s first Event Application for Downtown Events. Furthermore, I dedicated myself to assisting entrepreneurs and small business owners in establishing their businesses in downtown Rocky Mount.
Recognizing my expertise, I was recruited to work for the Department of Commerce’s Main Street and Rural Planning Center on a new initiative called Downtown Strong. This involved collaborating with Prosperity Zone planners and Downtown Strong communities, as well as organizing and preparing the annual NC Main Street Conference, which brought together 94 communities each year.
In May 2020, I took on the role of Director of the Small Business Center, where I became an invaluable resource for over 100 entrepreneurs and small business owners. I was committed to their success and provided free one-on-one business counseling, educational workshops, classes, and various other opportunities through the center.
Driven by my desire to help others reach their full potential, I expanded the services of Ajon’s Professional Solutions. Initially focused on small business marketing, website and mobile application development, and professional development skills, my company now offers a broader range of services, including resume writing and job search assistance.
In April 2022, I made the bold decision to leave my position as Director of the Small Business Center and devote myself fully to my own business. Despite the challenges faced in the first year, I persevered, serving over 100 clients and securing notable contracts and opportunities. I planned the City of Rocky Mount’s first Capital Symposium at the Rocky Mount Event Center and was named the Community Organizer for Rocky Mount Global Entrepreneurship Week by the Global Entrepreneurship Network. Additionally, I was chosen as the Grow with Google Digital Coach for North Carolina, selected by Google in partnership with the City of Wilson and Main Street America. My expertise also led me to be a panelist at the NC MWBE Coordinators Network 38th annual Professional Development conference.
“My target audience consists of aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own business, as well as individuals who already have a business that may not be registered or operating officially.” I enjoy partnering with organizations and government entities to aid them in their efforts to support small businesses.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals have proven to be the most powerful and effective source of clients for my business. The rapid growth I’ve experienced is primarily attributed to the power of word-of-mouth and the positive experiences my clients share with others. Consistently, when I onboard new clients, they often mention that someone they trust recommended they connect with me. This speaks volumes about my ability to deliver exceptional services and create an outstanding experience that turns clients into enthusiastic brand ambassadors. The network of satisfied clients I’ve cultivated has become an invaluable asset, continuously fueling the influx of new clients to my business.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What has truly contributed to building my reputation in the market is my unwavering authenticity and approachability. By simplifying complex business concepts and presenting them in relatable ways, I have earned a reputation for being a trusted resource in helping others understand the intricacies of entrepreneurship. This is particularly significant considering my own background as a first-generation rural entrepreneur. Starting a business as a first-generation entrepreneur presents unique challenges, as we often lack the advantages and guidance that come with a family history of entrepreneurship. Despite these obstacles, I harnessed my determination and work ethic, inspired by my hardworking parents, to embark on a journey of building generational wealth and launching my own business.
My personal narrative resonates strongly with my target audience, as many can relate to the struggles and aspirations of being the first in their families to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. This relatability fosters a deeper connection and trust between myself and those I serve. As a resource connector, I take immense pleasure in sharing valuable information and resources with others. Clients and colleagues alike know that when they seek my assistance, they will not only receive the information they were seeking but also gain additional insights and resources they may not have even anticipated.
By remaining true to myself and cultivating a personable approach, I have established a solid reputation as someone who genuinely cares about helping others succeed. This commitment, paired with my own experiences and relatability, has positioned me as a go-to resource within my market. Clients and peers trust that when they engage with me, they will leave with the guidance, knowledge, and resources they sought, and more.
