Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dion & Rachel Laws. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dion & Rachel , appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Dion attended college at UMKC majoring in video production. There he learned the art of video production and video editing. Rachel also attended UMKC with a major in Communications and then received her MBA from Avila.
We have always had a passion for owning our own business but life demands put a pause on this desire. Dion joined the US Army several years ago and was later deployed to Cuba in 2022. Before leaving for Cuba, we created the business and took a pause on the execution of the business. Once Dion finished deployment, JLaws Media began running as an official LLC and filming became active and alive.
We already had the business plans together, tools necessary for filming and editing but began marketing the business to grab the KC audiences attention.
With several wedding films in production and numerous small business promos, we knew it was time to grow more and decided to switch up the business name to appeal to our target audience. In May 2023, an announcement was created to officially transition from JLaws Media to Focus+ Films.
Currently, we are in the transition process to ensure our past clients are aware of the name change but are excited for the official name change very soon.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Dion and I both came from parents that did not attend college so it was VERY important for us to change the dynamic of education and knowledge. We also got married REALLY young (20 years old) so we’ve literally grown up together; through the high’s and low’s.
Because of this, we’ve always had a drive to work hard and make our dreams into a reality. We knew we both didn’t want to rely on corporate businesses to make our dreams alive, so we began our videography business ourselves. That’s the exciting part of working for ourselves. We get to really get to know our clients, serve them and also put a lot of detail into our craft of filmmaking and strive to do our very best.
We want our followers to know that when we share new work we have done on social media, we really put our best efforts at making the film/video. A lot of effort was taken into account of our clients personality, what they wished to achieve for their film/video and they received a quality product that didn’t break their bank.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Dion is military trained but also a videographer as well. While the two career paths don’t seem to align, the cool part about life is that you can choose a certain career path but never let a dream die out. This is exactly what happened when it came to his passion for film making. He NEVER stopped perfecting his craft, always had the camera in hand and we have plenty of vacation films to cherish! In all honesty, a lot of people go to college for one thing but end up going in another career path due to the availability of jobs. In Dion’s case, he always persevered and never let his love for video making stop him.
Rachel is a Communication major but always wanted to start a business. She is a REALLY hard worker but is a strong yet sensitive soul. She came to me in 2018 with the idea of starting a videography business and I knew we had to make it a reality. She uses her business and project management certificate to keep our business organized, while also enjoying interacting with chamber members with Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce.
The both of us have pivoted a lot in our business and career choices to get to where we are today. The exciting thing about it is that we are not done. We have a lot of goals for ourselves and Focus+ Films and look forward to what the rest of this year brings.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Fun story here! Dion and I met at Worlds of Fun when we were both 15 in the Orient Express line. We both talked on the phone as we attended different high school’s and here we are now, married with 2 kiddos running an awesome videography business as business partners!
