We were lucky to catch up with Jessie Green recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jessie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I never considered that I would or could do anything better then this. (Not to say I can’t) However I remember sitting down one day and deciding this was it, this was what I was good at. When you think of work and life, you want a relationship between getting by and loving what you do well enough to do it everyday. I knew that is what I’ve always wanted. I recently took the dive into being a freelance artist, its been a learning curve and I appreciate every moment.
I’ve been able to build stable relationships with those in my community and have learned from first hand experience that running a business is more then its thought to be. But I wouldn’t change my path as an artist for anything.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Jessie Green, I am a freelance artist and illustrator. I’ve been creating things all my life (literally), as its where I find the most peace in a chaotic life and world. I’m able to tune out everything and focus on what I’m making. It makes the days seem so short when you get into a good groove!
Because of my natural want and ability to create, I begged for supplies and learned to freelance before I even had a “First job”. I’d do small commissions on art forums for years. From there I attended KCAI and graduated in 2018, specializing in illustration.
I began to freelance about two years ago after my first solo show in September of 2021. It wasn’t until last year it became more of a main source of work.
I offer murals, fine art, illustration work (of almost any sort), digital work and so on. I personally believe that if you can learn it, why not try? I love bringing processes together to create a piece!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was the one of the first people in my family to attend college, I’m proud because that act alone told others it was okay to pursue higher education for what you love. Since then I’ve seen younger family members graduating and so on. I’m not probably directly responsible but it’s nice to know that even just an image on social media of me in a cap in gown made them hungry to do the same.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I did digital art for over 10 years, and was asked about them back then. Then it seemed new and interesting but I personally like my work to be accessible and even physical. I also didn’t fully understand the concept when I first learned of them to care (I believe this was high school) Since then I’ve seen them gain traction but am personally not interested. Also I’ve seen an increase in scams using them on different art platforms. Be careful!
