We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brit Phatal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brit, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I believe my timing is divine!!
I was a notorious it girl in Montreal before I started doing makeup professionally in my late twenties. Every weekend was an opportunity to serve looks and show them bitches how it’s done. As someone who was never really career-focused, I needed to purposefully take my time to explore my fantasies and find my identity as a person, before accepting my fate as an artist.
I always knew it was my destiny to contribute to world peace, but once I figured I would change the world by using makeup, I knew I owed it to myself to slay and lead with creativity.
I spent a lot of time thinking about my timing and I definitely felt the pressure to succeed at a younger age. I overcame many obstacles by undertaking the task of becoming a famous makeup artist so late in the game, with so much to prove and so many skeptics to convert. Now at 30, I know that I had to do what i had to do to reach my full potential and become the icon I am today.
Art takes time. Artists need to party and sit around doing nothing in order to produce!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Brit Phatal. The Real Brit Phatal.
I am a multidisciplinary visual artist and fantasy producer.
I think what sets me apart from other creators is my unapologetic style, my versatility as an artist, and my radical approach to art.
While I am known professionally to snatch a visage, I also contribute to the culture with my photography and video. Pulling inspiration from my it-girl days, I am currently directing my first-ever self-produced short movie. It’s going to be beyond iconic.
I want my fans to know that the best thing you can do as an artist is to feed that childlike curiosity, learn to befriend your inner demons, and accept Satan as your ultimate leader in reaching your full creative potential.
Indulge in music, movies, or whatever speaks to your soul. Embrace your darkest fantasies, and take the time you need to be unproductive. Remember that defining your work can be cathartic, but can also limit your full potential.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The more I get to elevate and be put in the fashion and entertainment world, the more passionate I feel about the importance of representation in front and behind the camera.
As a non-binary Asian artist, I have defied odds and broke ceilings. It’s obvious to me the world needs to see someone who looks like me, with my perspective, in an elevated position of power, and in front of mainstream media.
My recent representation as a beauty artist by a local talent agency will allow me to connect to my roots, and reach the French Canadian audience. This partnership will allow me to advocate for authentic representation.
I believe that art can change the world, and understanding my power is the first step to shaking up the collective and creating that shift in culture, that I believe we all desperately need
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I find so many aspects of it to be rewarding.
I love the intimacy I get with my models. The fact that I get to experience different dynamics with someone by undertaking the roles of Glamour technician, Director, and Photographer permits me to get the whole spectrum of my identity as a multidisciplinary artist.
Seeing someone transform and blossom in front my lens is very humbling.
I also love the reward of connecting with others through art. I embrace my dark fantasies and inner demons when I create. I love being able to use art to discuss and bring up a conversation on subjects that can be seen as taboo or disruptive.
To be able to find community through my ideas, which ultimately stem from the most intimate and personal parts of me, is extremely rewarding.
