We caught up with the brilliant and insightful KEHSA CHESTER a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
KEHSA , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
The most important lesson I learned from a prior job. Customers/ Clients by into the person before the product. When I worked for K-mart after college my position was Lead Fashion Associate. My responsibilities were floor layouts and organizing apparel to make them appealing to the customers. Example: If summer was approaching as soon as they walked in the store they would see swimsuits, shorts, and, sunglasses etc.
I worked at a store where the customer base was 35 & up. It was on the beach in an area where a lot of seniors reside. I noticed no matter how much I organized or displayed what was required, no one was purchasing. Our sales in the fashion department wasn’t bad, but we needed to be much better.
One day I was talking to a customer and she said to me “I come here every week, and you always smile, ask me do I need any assistance, or ask me how my day is going” But I don’t know anything else. I didn’t understand what she meant until we started talking. The moment I started telling her about myself and why I love fashion and why I would purchase the apparel she was looking at…it hit me. She is buying into me, not this product.
I was correct!!! Once I took on this habit customers would say to me ” I buying this because of you and how you make me feel”

KEHSA , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I struggled with my weight and confidence most of my life. After a failed marriage and failed career paths, I had a turning point in 2012. I said “NO MORE” I took control of my life, first by seeking out the one person I knew would help, guide, and be with me through it all. GOD!! I prayed and God answered. I joined a weight loss program weighing in at 245lbs. Losing my first 70lbs I then realized at this moment I had a passion and gift for physical fitness and motivating others.
Fitness is not all physical, there is a process of changing your MIND before you can change your APPEARANCE. I made the decision to get certified in Personal Training, Group Fitness, and Xtreme Hip-Hop Step with Phil Weeden. (An old step aerobics concept with new swag) This was the major turning point of my fitness career. Xtreme Hip Hop Step motivated me to launch my own business in 2021 KCWFITNESS, LLC. What make my fitness program different? I focus on the mental before starting you on a physical program. You have to get to the root of the issue mentally, before you can correct the physical.
What excited me about this way of training, many people don’t realize it can be things from the past, or current life experience that is causing them to not be healthy or physically fit. My fitness career has allowed her to train, teach, travel, and speak at events and churches on health and fitness across the United States

How did you build your audience on social media?
Because my business is about being healthy and fit. I would post my before and after photos, videos of me working out, videos of client testimonials, flyers, and podcast interviews, etc. The key is research!!! My advice is look at others on Instagram and Tiktok. See what others are doing and saying, then you come up with a way to do it better. Presentation is everything… make sure your backgrounds are clear and you don’t have any background distractions.
You are your greatest advertisement for your business. Offer free products or events People always want something for nothing.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Absolutely!!!
Les Brown’s video “It’s not over until I win”
Jomo Cousin Book “Watch Your Mouth” I love this book because it teaches you to be careful about the words you speak daily. When you are in business or just in our everyday lives. Whatever you speak in the atmosphere you hear it. If you are speaking things like “I will never get this done” or “This is too hard” or “I can’t do this” Once you say it out loud the mind begins to operate in those things.
Andrea Evans Dixon Book: Intentional!! This book gives you principles to experience success in every area of your life.
