We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Simon Sarkissian a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Simon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Years before I started my business I was graduating from college and getting ready to start law school. When I realized I didn’t want to go to law school, I completely changed my career path. I did not want to pursue a career I was not passionate about. I officially started my business in 2021. I am grateful that I went to college and graduated with a psychology degree, but knowing what I know now I would have loved to start my career in hair much sooner.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up I always had a passion for hair, but did not give it much attention. I went to school and graduated with a bachelors in psychology. The plan was to continue education and go to law school. After realizing that I despised the direction my life was going in, I decided to change everything up and enrolled myself into cosmetology school. Now I work in a salon in Toluca Lake, California. I provide many services from; haircuts, coloring hair, hair treatments, and hair extensions. I specifically love providing hair extension services. I love seeing my clients feel and look their absolute best!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I was making the transition from law school to cosmetology school, I was faced with many obstacles that at times I thought I could not get passed. I had very good job with high pay and benefits, but I had to leave all that behind to go to cosmetology school full time to start my journey in hair.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the “comfort” of a traditional 9-5 job. I had to step out of my comfort zone to truly succeed.
